I walked into a record store when I was about 20, and I heard Ella singing Cole Porter. Made me an Ella and Cole Porter fan immediately. Nice choice.

Still utterly unreadable. I fear I'll always be too much of a cretin to understand the appeal of that book.

My 2nd round pick:

Spoiler:
Bon Scott

In my mind, the best rock and roll voice ever. Dirty, screeching, gleeful...Bon Scott had a one-of-a-kind voice.

Just balls to the walls rock and roll. Great stuff.

No, Only Foghorm Leghorn has been picked. If people want to pick fictional characters, they are welcome to. Mel Blanc is still on the table.

John Cole: check PM before picking if you're open to suggestions. If this person falls out of the top ten I declare the draft to be assnuts

Great picks so far otherwise

I know the obvious choice, but in this restless world when love is ended before it's begun, I just need a little Nat King Cole--and why not?

I could easily say that this pick is actually two in one as the harmonic is also a voice in many of his songs but I will let this pass by - Thus; giving Phat Mack an opening for another harmonic player that was the ultimate voice on harmonica. Anyway, I am please to present one of the greatest blues voices ever;
Howlin Wolf a great pick. I wanted to post a youtube of him doing Killing Floor with Jimi Hendrix, but it seems to have disappeared from youtube.

Have no idea how it is possible to read the first few pages and ever put the book down.

Round Two

Karen Carpenter

When I first heard "voice draft" the 2 names that instantly popped into my head were Frankie Valli and Karen Carpenter. Since I already too Frankie it is Karens turn.

This one goes into the best pure voice category. Maybe the most raw talent of any voice ever. So pure, so clean. so perfect. It is a tragedy that she killed herself on many levels. She never really had much chance to stray away from her syrupy pop music roots and that voice could have evolved into so much more. I for one would have liked to see her tackle the standards of the great American songbook that has made many lessor voices shine.

So far:
Frankie Valli
Karen Carpenter

Round 3

Frank Gorshin

This one goes into my man of many voices category. In addition to reaching fame as The Riddler Frank Gorshin was also a very accomplished impressionist. Impressionists were very popular back in the 60's and Frank was a good one. There were lots of Hollywood types with distinctive voices and he could very comically mimic them.

This is also a sentimental pick. When I was about 14 or so we took a family vacation driving out west to California. We made a stop in Las Vegas and my parents took us to a real Las Vegas show. It was the opening act of Teresa Brewer ( a fine voice in her own right) and Frank Gorshin as the headliner. It was at the now defunct Frontier Hotel. The show was absolutely fabulous and I was a huge Gorshin fan from that point on.

So far:
Frankie Valli
Karen Carpenter
Frank Gorshin

So, after John Cole selects Nat King Cole, he turns to the great Holly Cole, because she's great, and she shares the name of my sister-in-law. First became acquainted with Holly Cole from the old TV show Due South.

At one time I thought reading aloud, a fixture of my childhood, was a lost art. The advent of audio books changed all that, with the exception that now listening is a solitary pleasure with the buds jacked in, rather than a communal one.

So my next pick is of the World's Greatest Reader, Nigel Planer. I hope that you all like Terry Pratchett books, for as far as I know, that's all he reads...
