El D,

I'd consider the AleSmith barrel aged night (depending on if they release some fun Speedway treatments) and the Eclipse tasting dinner with their head brewer.

Also, maybe a Younger release if you haven't had it. But those are probably insanely busy.

You've chosen the best events though, IMO.

Pliny,

Yeah, the beer week Younger events are always a zoo. I know a few places around here that get kegs and keep it on the DL, so I usually manage to have some. I think it is a great beer, but don't think it's as super-amazing as the reviews. It's kinda crazy, just a few years ago it would be on tap and easily available for a couple weeks after release.

Looks like the "Oregon's Finest" event at the Livermore Saloon is going to have Boneyard's Notorious triple IPA. I haven't tried it, but some people I know have said it's the best IPA they've ever had -- better than Younger.

The event is on the same day as the big IPA fest you already posted, and given that there will be plenty of triple IPAs on tap there, maybe they'll have Notorious as well.

Originally I was going to fly out to Russian River for the Pliny release this year, but decided it was too much effort to wait in line for 5 hours for a few pours. Almost a certainty to go to Philly to a couple of events there, or even fly back to Colorado when they get kegs if I can find cheap enough plane flights.

This weekend I'm getting to do a vertical of BCBS and all its variants from when it was first released through this year. Rumor has it someone is bringing a port Double Barrel Damon too so I'm super excited.

alesmith night would be a good one. the smoked beers at the bbq joint would prob be a nice change of pace.

a night of imperial ipas would result in me being three sheets within an hour and unable to discern tastes.

if anyone is looking to trade away heady topper/pliny the elder PM me or post in here and LMK what you want. I could probably get Three Floyds stuff, zombie dust, dreadnaught etc etc in exchange

I'm going to be in San Jose next Monday-Thursday visiting a friend and am looking to do something for beer week. We are free all day Tuesday and were thinking of going to Russian river early and then trying to hit a brewery or an event on the way back. Anyone have any experience going there and can give me advice or should I skip the pliny madness for something better?

Heading to Long Beach in a few weeks, looking forward to getting my hands on some Russian River - heard Beachwood BBQ is the place to go.

They have a raffle to get Pliny the Younger:

And one hell of a bottle list

Recommendations, plan of attack? Plan to go two consecutive nights, likely trying 3-4 per night.

meh, no big loss....blue point is pretty withered. Haven't posted much here but If anyone on West coast or in Mid west is interested in acquiring anything from New England Brewing co I'm super close to the brewery and am always interested in trades.

Can someone explain the basic mechanics of beer trades to me? I thought there were restrictions on shipping beer especially across state lines especially when one of those states is MA. EG I plan to go up to Vermont and buy an ass ton of Heady Topper etc sometime soon and would trade for other stuff but I don't know the legality or even if the beer survives to be honest?

Not sure how widely available this is, but if you see it, buy it! It's amazing.....Beautifully made saison aged briefly in Abbaye de Saint Bon Chien barrels to give it a hint of sourness. One of the best things I have had in a while.

In my experience always do Fed Ex, they ask next to no questions and I've had much success with shipments so far. If they do ask, tell them they are olive oils . Not sure which states do allow shipping and from which other states (it varies a lot I think) but I've never stated that I'm shipping beer

For beer shipping/trading, using USPS is illegal while FedEx and UPS is just against their terms of service.

I could go into more but this link is the definitive beer shipping guideline.

I've seen this asserted many times, but I don't believe it. I think shipping alcohol over state lines (and possibly within the state) without a license is illegal, regardless of how you ship it. I think that, in practical terms, you're less likely to face any criminal action from UPS and FedEx if they find alcohol (they'll just return the box, have you pick it up, or destroy it rather than contacting authorities). So I think there are some practical reasons to use UPS and FedEx rather than USPS. But I don't think there's any legal distinction.

That's why I refuse to do any trading that requires shipping - the risk of a really bad outcome is very small, but the costs potentially very high. And I don't feel like playing Pascal's Wager.

Both methods are definitely illegal, I didn't mean that UPS/FedEx are exempt. I was just saying (like you stated) that USPS there are potential legal repercussions while UPS/FedEx will just return/confiscate the box if it is found.

I think in practice, you would need to run really, really bad to fun into legal problems from shipping beer. bad outcomes might be

- broken bottles
- confiscated box (pretty unlikely)

but the Feds showing up seems veeeeeeery unlikely. unless you start sending kegs around

not enough to wait 8 hours because I should be able to get it a week later, but it could be a fun experience drinking it at the brewery.

this thread has some good info from people who went the last few years

looks like i'll just have wait and see how the lines are and whether i'll have better options that day.
