Any fans of this totally awesome relatively new band out there?

I think they're the most original, exciting and theatrical band to hit heavy metal since Kiss. Yes, I just compared Babymetal to Kiss and no I'm not backing down from that stance.

If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, go to YouTube and search for "Babymetal Gimme Chocolate official video" - it already has over a hundred million views so you know I'm not the only one who likes them!

I don't know what to think about this - it's like a cross between death metal and Japanese girl pop.

After a couple decades of things like this, I'm still not sure if Japanese fringe pop culture is insanely brilliant or just plain nuts.

Do they want milk chocolate or dark chocolate. The girls in the front look sweet and have a catchy tune, but the guys in the back wearing white dresses keep jumping in and ruining it.

I think comparing them to Kiss is accurate. In the fact that Kiss is my least favorite band of all time, and I think BabyMetal is awful insofar as "metal" being any real part of it. Its pop music with a lot of distortion and fast drums. Same thing with Country music today really only being pop music with a fiddle.

That said, the instrumentation is very well done.

Kiss is your least favorite band of all time? Really? Not judging just very surprised.

The funny thing is that they influenced some of my favorite players of all time. Like Dimebag.

I liked maybe 2 songs when I was very young but they always annoyed me. I wasn't interested when they were on the way up and only found out about them when they were nothing but a musical advertisement for their merch. I kinda went from Journey being my favorite band (cause of my mom's friends) as a kid to Slayer around '87. I didn't stop much in between in regards to heavier music.

That's exactly what it is. And what's so impressive (at least to me) is that somebody figured out way to make that combination ACTUALLY WORK. Choreographed dances to death metal? Are you kidding me?

The line between the two is often blurred LOL I'm sure the Japanese say the same things about Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Lady Gaga, Ru Paul, Boy George etc.

FWIW they're all hand-picked, experienced, world-class musicians who could play in any metal band anywhere. One of the two guitarists was a music professor.

I googled "camed" but was unable to find a definition or acronym that fit the context. Explanation would be appreciated.

Both bands have Japanese females who wear costumes. The similarities start and end there.

Doesn't Bandmaid sound American? Seriously, close your eyes - couldn't someone convince you you were listening to Pink or Evanescence or even early Heart?

If you want to talk about other players who have entered the game, Youtube Pritz or LadyBaby. But none of the copycats can even touch the original IMHO.

I like both bands, and good metal in a lot of formats. I suppose that we disagree about how broadly drawn the rules of this game might be.

If we agreed about everything the internet would be boring!

I actually like Bandmaid's music too. Straight up, in-your-face, no-BS rock.

Sorry DalTX. One more post and I'll show myself out. Pinky swear.

Here's Akane Hirose on drums, on a fairly simple kit. Super efficient and not the least bit ostentatious. I think she has the chops to one day be considered an elite rock 'n roll drummer.

As someone who'd rather clean back vocals in metal be replaced by screams, today I've discovered a beginning Russian duo Sellest Media best known for Babymetal covers so far, produced theatrically enough for their limited budget, which please my unpretentious ear even though the tracks are programmed in their entirety.

As for Babymetal themselves, I do appreciate their instrumentation and their effort to introduce the mainstream audience to metal of decent quality

As zikzak has probably hinted above, similarly flamboyant metal acts have been known in Japan for 2-3 decades already, within the visual kei movement (that does have all-female bands such as exist†trace), and in the 2010s, there has been a whole girls metal band boom there.

Also, surprisingly, there has seemingly been no mention of PelleK on 2+2 yet, although he's popular on Youtube. He has a power voice ranging from D2 to C6. He's made only two Babymetal covers (of 'Megitsune' and of 'Karate') but his collection of covers of Japanese songs in general is much bigger and includes opening themes of anime.

An erratum to the previous post:

Sellest Media have eventually found a drummer and gear, as seen in the 'Karate' cover

Aldious is another good female Japanese metal band. Talented musicians, easy on the eyes and they have a pretty strong underground following in Japan and throughout the world.

Dominator

Wow coon74, thank you for posting those!!!

Sellest media does Babymetal justice, and I enjoy it for no other reason than to vindicate that there *are* people out there who love Babymetal as much as I do. Top-notch musicianship in those videos and, as you say, for the budget, plenty theatrical.

PelleK has a great voice - I was thinking he reminded me of Sebastian Bach of Skid Row but with a cleaner, more polished voice, so I wasn't surprised to see 18 and Life on his list of videos. He did a great job on Through the Fire and Flames too. I wish my taste in music coincided with his a bit better, I only liked maybe 8 or 10 of the songs he covered.

I thought ExistTrace and Aldious were just okay.

I'm not sure what your musical (and aesthetic) preferences are, but I hope you discover someone extra to your liking in a big thread listing female J-rock and visual kei bands.
