Well, it's been a year since we first did this...and we had such a great time on the last one, I couldn't resist doing it all over again...

Here's the draft thread from last year, for those of you who don't know what it is I'm talking about.

One of the rules I'm thinking of instituting is that if you were part of the draft last year, you can't choose anything you chose then. I'm also thinking of changing some of the categories, so it's not exactly the same...so if you want to suggest categories, do it here.

I'm thinking of dropping Religion/God and Website as categories, and adding something else like Design, Flex-picks and/or something else...

Who's in?

As an alternative, I was thinking of having a 20th Century Artist draft - where we choose only artists, writers, musicians, painters, etc. from the 20th Century and beyond.

In...trested, but I think we could make things more interesting than just making people make new picks. Also, I think that the religion picks were some of the most interesting from the last draft. People were pretty creative in that category.

I loved it last time. I would like to be in again.

You can add a food category. Where people write in their favorite dish.

In. I admit to being a draft slut.

All in favor of tweaking. I like the food idea. I also think the idea we discussed of having a draft of the "worst", in which we pick the most wretched poet, painting, song, etc., should be considered.

Here were the previous categories:

An album/piece of music
A poem
A film
A web site
A painting
A sculpture/modern installation
A piece of literature (book, novella, short-story, a speech, or non-fiction work)
A piece of architecture
A television show
A monologist/comedian/orator
a philosopher/philosophy
a god/religion

Once a piece of art or person was taken, the rest of that person's work in that field was then off the board for the rest of the draft.

I'm not sure about food...this is a desert island draft, and the OOT draft with food had a lot of headaches as to what dishes would constitute a food to be off the board.

Picking an "evil" or worst world might be interesting...but I'm not sure.

I do like getting rid of website - that didn't really generate any discussion except whether or not Wiki.org was a portal site or not.

I like adding a "thing" as a design - like a chair, a car, whatever. Maybe a "fashion?"

Or ad a flex pick or wildcard slot - where you can draft a 2nd of the other categories - or something completely different from the categories.

I had fun with it last year. I'm in.

I think a food, a beverage, a weapon and/or a warrior might make for fun additions.

In. Only downside is that I can't get on 2+2 from work, so I will probably have to be more careful about PMing my picks to other people when my turn nears.

I really enjoyed last year's draft, but I would like to see a decent amount of changes. 20th century idea seems pretty good to me--you could keep most of the categories the same but still get a very different result. Food and/or beverage would be good additions IMO. I don't know what sort of debates they've had about different items, but I think you could be pretty generous in allowing things that may have the same ingredients as long as the end result is different.

Yeah, I think going 20th century through today only for draftable picks is a good way to spice it up. An evil draft is also interesting, and could have some pretty good comedy. Relatedly, the Politard forum actually had a really awesome draft of the most hated political figures of all time. It turned out to be fun and highly educational.

The idea of warrior seems cool. We could have a favorite fictional character. Picking one would take away the author (or maybe just the series on which the character appears).

The 20th century idea sounds good, but I don't think it changes things that much. At least half of the categories were 20th century centric last time anyways. Maybe a bigger restriction would be post-1970s. Taking away a good chunk of films and music.

Ah, I like this. You're drafting a new culture (or filling up a time capsule or something), but you can only draft things for your culture that were created in your own lifetime.

Okay, here's what I've come up with:

A 20th Century(+) Arts and Humanities Draft!

We will pick from these categories that were developed or came to prominence in the 20th Century:

  • An album/piece of music
  • A film
  • A painting
  • A sculpture/modern installation
  • A piece of literature (book, poem, novella, short-story, a speech, or non-fiction work)
  • A piece of architecture
  • A television show
  • A monologist/comedian/orator
  • A singer
  • A Modern Tool that reflects your Design Aesthetic (for example, a Black and Decker nail gun, or a '57 Thunderbird)
  • A philosophy/god/religion

I've taken out the category of poem and moved it into Literature.
I've combined Philosophy with God/Religion.
I've added the category of Singer
I've added the category of Modern Tool
I've removed the category of Web Site

I don't think food or drink really fits in this draft....that's more of a desert island thing, you know? And I don't want to make rulings on whether or not "chicken" is off the board when someone chooses Chicken Coron Blue and someone else wants to take a Chicken Schawerma! no thanks. Warrior and someone to hate also doesn't seem like it fits.

In so far:

Enrique
Mr Wookie
Francis M.H.
Pelican86
crashjr
MrBaseball
JohnCole
ToTheInternet
Dominic

Anyone else?

And I rule that Eddie Izzard HAS to be the first pick, no matter what.

The Tool category seems out of place. You might as well replace that one with a flex pick.

I like it...it has design implications...therefore, artistic!

I mean tools don't represent culture nearly as much as the other draftable entities. It's not really close.

Also, actors/actresses and athletes attained cultural prominence in the 20th century, so including a comedian slot and leaving those off seems criminal. Perhaps you could merge actors/actresses with singers and call it the Performing Artist category.

I like the modern tool category. And I think it fits fine. Tool design is probably the most obvious artistic and aesthetic thing we use on a daily basis.

I like the Performing Artist category, and will have that instead of singer. Not sure where comedian fits in tho.....orator or performing artist?

Maybe combine orator/comedian into Performing artist? I like it.

So no separate Orator category...instead, a Performing Artist category that encompasses singers, actors, comedians, athletes, orators, etc.

I'm confused on the Tool category. Would a good pick be Dane Cook?
