For my next pick I am going to choose the only blockbuster type film on my list;

Apollo 13 (1995) dir. Ron Howard

I am always impressed by films that can take a historical event, especially one that is among the most famous on earth, and create a suspenseful, riveting story. Everyone knows they lived, but I swear to god every time I watch this movie I hold my breath a little on re-entry.

It has a few cheesy moments, especially the stuff about the families back on earth but every second in space is genius film making.

Not to mention this is the most realistic space film ever made.

I was going to get Heavenly Creatures in the next round. I love the movie. Great pick Dom.

I also really like Run Lola Run, I liked it so much, I watched it twice in the movie theaters on the same day. I forgot about it when compiling my short list though.
To me, having several "runs", reminded me of a videogame.

I don't think it has been anywhere near as influential as the Matrix, but you can point out examples to prove me wrong, I just couldn't think of examples of movies that were influenced by Run Lola Run. I know there have been parodies and homages, but to be influential you need more than that.

Apollo 13 is one of the few movies where I fell asleep in the movie theater. I've never seen it since. Maybe I should try.

My rankings are chronological from most recent to least recent (except that I would swap Pi and Requiem). That is, Black Swan>The Wrestler > The Fountain > Pi > Requiem for a Dream. I think, I am in the minority when it comes to the Fountain. I loved the movie.

I pick...

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
They say l'd be great whatever instrument l chose. But on guitar, no-one can touch me.

Spoiler:
Except this gypsy in France.

I'd really hate it if this somehow got sniped, so I'll just pick this now.
Written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Sean Penn, this is a pretty humorous, but a complicated fictional portrait of the second best guitarist in the world, next to Django Reinhardt. Sean Penn is pretty good in his role; sort of not a really nice guy, but not really a huge jerk either. He likes to drink, burn money and women, but also enjoys beautiful music, shooting rats by the garbage dump and watching trains passing by. One day he meets a girl who may help him become a decent human being, but maybe not.

This another movie by Allen paying tribute to the old times, and he is pretty good at that, recreating a very vivid and vibrant atmosphere. This movie has sweet music and cute mute girls, which is all you can pretty muck ask for in a movie.

-Miller's Crossing (The Coen Brothers)
-L.A. Confidential (Curtis Hanson)
-Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis)
-Short Cuts (Robert Altman)
-Sweet and Lowdown (Woody Allen)

im not necessarily saying there have been movies copying it exactly, im mostly saying there have been movies using things the cutting in and out of animation and the overall pace of the movie...

it's funny you mention video games, to me the movie scott pilgram is very lola influenced, i could prob think of some more examples, but it's more just movies copying the frenetic pace and feel of lola than anything... i just think it brought a new standard to this type of movie, like a new way to make an action film and that has influenced other movies in the same vein since...

regardless i think it's def one of the best action movies of the decade and was unique in it's presentation at the time of it's release, it that way i compare it to the matrix i guess...

Looks like I jinxed myself. I was going to take Apollo 13 this round. I was so sure I wouldn't get sniped, I'd already done the write up.

Great movie.

I haven't seen Scott Pilgrim but I've read some of the comics. The comic is very videogame influenced. So maybe connecting Lola and Pilgrim is because of the videogame feel. Does Scott Pilgrim move at a frenetic pace?

In any case, I love Run Lola Run, I just haven't noticed a big influence on other movies.

Lola is great and Pilgrim is horrendous but I can see a distant connection.

Pi is my fave aronofsky film then requiem

Wasn't a huge fan of black swan

Pi was def on my list; I still have a 3' tall pi sign that I got from the local indie theater when they took it down after running the movie

I caught heavenly creatures on tv well after Lotr and remember liking it; I'm a fan of surrealism tho

Apollo 13 was well done; we even used it in our leadership class in a seminar based around it

ROUND 6 PICK:

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY

I feel like I need a comedy in here somewhere and this is hilarious. There are just so many great scenes. If you can't find anything funny in this movie, you have no sense of humour.

*****

My Picks:

Trainspotting
Heat
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Natural Born Killers
Three Kings
There's Something About Mary

It's probably in my top 100 of 90s but wouldn't have picked it without hardcore snipage but yeah excellent movie. I was actually skeptical that the 90s were so much better than the 00s but it is definitely true.

Bobby Peru might be the creepiest character of all time.

Yes, I'm currently watching Wild at Heart.

ugh it would suck if this movie got picked... so i am taking it now

Spoiler:

Pretty cool movie that is really well shot by Scorsese. He really skillfully captures the elegant styles of the late 19th century upper class New York. All the drawing rooms, dinning rooms, ball rooms, mansions, diner tables, dancing floors are all very nicely visually illustrated. His style is really sharp in this movie and the general elegance is nicely mixed with gossip, nastiness and pretty rigid rules of their society.

-Miller's Crossing (The Coen Brothers)
-L.A. Confidential (Curtis Hanson)
-Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis)
-Short Cuts (Robert Altman)
-Sweet and Lowdown (Woody Allen)
-The Age of Innocence (Martin Scorsese)

This one is sure to piss some people off;

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) dir. Stanley Kubrick

Too many people claim this film is boring which honestly baffles me. I find it an insightful examination of in/fidelity and marriage in the modern world where sex is everywhere and easily accessible to all.

Kubrick takes on all forms of sex from the mundane to the deviant, but unlike a Hollywood film this one does not condemn its characters for being sexual, it celebrates them. This is a film that understand that sex is suppose to be fun.

[rant] Sadly, the above is not true in the abomination of an American version where digital people were added to hide the OH THE HORROR naked people! It's amazing that large portions of the country can think it's mandatory that every child pack a handgun to preschool but goes nuts if a child sees a naked person. [/rant]
