For me the saddest movie I've ever seen is Scenes from a Marriage by Ingmar Bergman.

i'll take Usual Suspects

it fills a lot of the void left from not getting Reservoir Dogs, although it's not as good

Another tough choice for me. But for my round 2 pick I will take

Glengarry Glen Ross James Foley 1992

The story of a sales office and the pressures involved. Tremendous cast and performances and some of the best dialog ever. Dialog is very important to me and it is impressive in this one. I really wasn't sure if this one would drop this far but then again I think I view movies on a different wavelength than most here.

Round 1 - The Silence of the Lambs
Round 2 - Glengarry Glen Ross

good choice...believe it or not, this didn't even make my board, but I knew someone else would end up choosing it, so I didn't feel bad

i like a lot of david mamet's movies, his dialog is always gripping... spartan and redbelt are also good choices from the 2000's if people are interested in watching more of his films...

see it's so hard to critique this movie without offending someone...

i think's it's a great movie, obv well shot and paced, but i agree with hotdog, the story is so polarizing in it's characters and views that by the end either you agree with everything in the movie or you are a racist/bigot/nazi sympathizer...

the truth is there's no real depth to any of the characters, even schindler who was a heavy womenizer and profited from nazi occupation comes off smelling like a rose, the only nazi character who has any depth is Ralph Fiennes (best performance of decade imo) who actually makes us feel a little something (ie maybe their is a human being inside of him) for his nazi commander character even though he is portrayed as a psychopath with mommy issues...

without any subtlety and ambiguity, too black and white. i do not need to be bashed into my head that nazis are evil, in order to feel contempt for them.

I like Glengarry Glen Ross but I didn't love it. The acting is fantastic, but I was expecting more.
I don't remember much of Usual Suspects or Schindler's list, but I remember loving them.

Round 2
Pick #11 (#26 overall)

12 Monkeys by Terry Gilliam (1995)

This is one of my favorite movies. I like it more than The Matrix (my first round pick), but I figured my love for 12 Monkeys was not as universal and therefore it would safely survive to round 2.

The movie is about a man from the future (Bruce Willis) who is sent back in time to find out about the 12 Monkeys, since they unleashed a virus that killed billions of people forcing humans to live underground. Time travel is an emerging science, therefore he is not always sent at the right time in the past. The film is inspired by a great French short movie called La Jetee.

12 Monkeys is one of the first movies I didn't understand on first viewing and was good enough to make me want to rewatch it immediately. It wasn't until the third watching that I felt I understood the movie. In my opinion, 12 Monkeys is the best time travel movie ever made . The movie is surprising and very interesting.

I love Brad Pitt's performance in this movie. One of my favorite scenes has him rant about how the government was able to predict his every movement from his time in the insane asylum, since the government had mapped out his brain and plugged it in a "probability matrix".

Terry Gilliam has done many good movies, but this is my favorite.

Alec Baldwin's scene in GGR is an all-time favorite scene, just ahead of Ricky Roma's rant.

Great, great movie and one I was definitely considering with my next pick.

The Usual Suspects is really good too obviously.

I've never seen The Matrix or 12 Monkeys amazingly. Neither film ever appealed to me but I must check them out.

My problem with GGGR is it is not so much a movie as a filmed play. I wish a good director had gotten the job.

Enrique - you have seen the Chris Marker short, La Jetee, that 12 Monkeys is based on, right? If not - you need to see it immediately!

And while I knew The Usual Suspects would be picked, I still hate that movie and think it's crap.

Seemed like such a shame to totally waste the entire potential of film language.

Round 2, Pick #29

Boogie Nights 1997 (Paul Thomas Anderson)

I admire directors who write their own material. I find it leads to a more awesome presentation of the story, as the director/writer is able to fully execute their vision. What I admire most about Boogie Nights is that Paul Thomas Anderson tried to make this movie as a short film in 1988, then basically a decade later he turned it into a feature film.

So with Boogie Nights you have a writer/director who is passionate about the material and it shows during the presentation. Critics claim PT Anderson is in love with his camera, that is most likely the case and it certainly isn't a bad thing. Some of the scenes and shots in this movie are fantastic and the attention to detail is astounding.

What I enjoyed most about Boogie Nights - is that despite the movie being set in the world of the adult film business, none of the characters felt cheapened or their motivations and goals less respectable because of the setting. Eddie/Dirk, Jack, Floyd, Buck, Rollergirl, Amber, Reed - they all have realistic and in most instances standard ambitions.

For most of the audience the 70s and 80s adult film business is only accessible at the movies. So Paul Thomas Anderson combines familiar struggles for his characters and sets them against an unfamiliar backdrop. Providing a truly enjoyable movie going experience.

Boogie Nights also boasts an impressive cast - Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Jullianne Moore, Willliam H Macy, Don Cheadle, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham, Alfred Molina, and many more.

The soundtrack is awesome as well.

Boogie Nights is just a fun movie.

-----------

Picks so far
Round 1, #2 - Fargo (1996, Joel and Ethan Cohen)
Round 2, #29 - Boogie Nights (1997, Paul Thomas Anderson)

I agree with Clovis...Foley is a competent director, but he obviously didn't have the pull to open up the play into something more cinematic
