I never play the lotto but for some reason when it hit's $100m I will buy a ticket. The funny thing is it doesn't have to actually be that high for it to change my life.

Question. Why do people buy a ticket only when it's that high as if there a major difference between winning $100m and $10m when most people make around $50k a year? and even $1m would be life changing

That sucks. I usually get into the workplace pools just for that reason. If my ****** coworkers won and I missed out I would be sooooooo pissed.

Funny thing is 4 of their co-workers were tied up in a law suit for a year, saying they deserved their cut, when they never even put money in...lol

Your posts remind me of a great commercial the new york lottery sponsored relating to your point exactly.

A man is sitting on his couch watching TV when his wife looks out the window and to her shock see's 100 dollar bills raining from the sky. Excitedly she turns to her husband and says lets get out there to get the money. The husband is unmoved and says nahhh it's probably only 7 or 8 million what's the point

Because the EV changes. Although, it's still negative

It was up to $200 mill last August. Odds are 1 in 176 mill... so it was actually +EV then.

If you are not going to play every week then there has to be some trigger. Prize size seems better than moon cycle.

Not sure how how the US lottery works but the main Canadian lottery becomes +EV somewhere in the $12-15M range so even though people playing the lottery likely don't take that into consideration it would explain the large jackpot rush.

I don't think the lotto has ever ACTUALLY been +EV-- You have to factor in taxes, in addition to the possibility that you will split the winnings, and when that happens the prizes 200 million and above become -EV again. I don't know that it ever would be +EV, because lottery participation grows rapidly as prizes get bigger and bigger.

+EV is irrelevant when your lifetime is way shorter than the expected amount of times it would take to win

While that is true you could counter with EV using dollars is also irrelevant when you are talking about such small and large numbers. $500 a year has such negligible impact on someone's quality of life who is not already destitute and it offers an infinitesimal chance at something that would have an extraordinary impact. When the numbers are like this you need to get into the utility that different monetary amount have.
