Suppose we agree that he can't actually become a penguin, which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans - but that he can have the *right* to become a penguin?

QOTD: (from an old TV episode I once saw) You're given a black box that has a button on it. You are told that if you push the button you will be given $1 million dollars--but someone you do not know will be killed as well.

Do you push the button?

My answer:

Spoiler:
I do not push it. I wouldn't be able to spend the money knowing that my greed caused the direct death of somone else. It would be blood money and I couldn't spend it, or even give it away knowing what I did to earn it.

Person killed is anonymous. You'll never know who they were or how they were killed.

I would push it a ton. Population control.
I don't even want the money.

I'd push it. There's no proof that the person dies because of you. Also, people die all the time, you get used to it eventually.

Actually, this was not in an old TV episode you saw, it was in movie; "The Box" (directed by Richard Kelly of "Donnie Darko" fame).

That being said, whilst I would love to be able to push the button, I would always assume that something bad would eventually happen to me because of it. Either getting arrested, or it would turn out that I DO know the person, or they would kill me.

So; answer = no.

Nice QOTD tho.

I had seen it on an episode of Amazing Stories (I believe, if not a similar show) on TV when I was a kid. It revolved around a poor couple that argued over pressing the button. Not surprised the idea surfaced elsewhere; it creates a fight in basic human emotions (greed vs compassion) but I never saw "The Box".

With a cool $1M you could save your balls from being stapled for 10 years. Think about how many lives you could create with that.

How will the person be killed and how soon after I push the button?

it depends on if I genuine believe someone will die. So if its like some magic land, or its conceivable that some kind of "voodoo magic" is possible than I would not push it because I would not ever want to cause the loss of someones life, but if some dude comes to my house and says heres a million if you push this button, I will assume he is crazy and get a mill freeroll, by some psycho.

I can't/won't push the button if I really think someone will be killed by my action. Love money but not enough to see someone else killed, let alone hurt, for it.

Can I push the button halfway and the person gets crippled or something for half the money?
