Having almost drowned in the dead of winter, I can tell you it's not without pain.

I think the key to drowning in cold water is that hypothermia can set in quickly and shut down the body. Having fallen through the ice in the winter, I concur that it can be very painful.

For whatever reason, the water I fell into was open so there was no ice to hit. I had been crossing a rope bridge, lost my balance, and was hanging onto the bridge before dropping into the water. Fortunately, they were able to get a rowboat to me pretty quickly.

I was thinking the area to motorboat was south of the actual location. Or that you stuck your head in water while someone was taking a bath.
