Should I just write the press release, then mass email it to BuzzFeed, Gawker, Vox, etc.

A thousand pardons to you, boris, and everyone else in this thread. The naked kids comment got to me a little bit. For some reason, a lot of people associates LGBT with pedophilia and that is completely wrong.

Re: The question of the day thread

QOTD:

Countertop water filters -- such as the one illuminated below -- seem to reduce the water's flow-rate (velocity), but also constricts volume. I always expect the water to speed up! Is this evidence of a flat Earth, and if not, how does this alien physics work?

Well, it also reduces pressure, so there's coming less water out per time. That's why it doesn't squirting out of that smaller hole.

Re: The question of the day thread

Wat?! Am I ready that correctly? You wonder why the volume of water coming out is reduced when you reduce the velocity of the water?

No, he wonders why the speed of the water coming out is reduced when you reduce the volume of the water.

Re: The question of the day thread

Now having reread it, I assume he is asking why the velocity of the water slows down, when you are reducing the area it comes out at. He mentions volume (which is 3 dimensional), which in rereading, I assume he means area.

Q = VA

Reduce A and theoretically V needs to increase to ensure the same Q.

But as Morph has mentioned the water filter reduces the pressure (or head), by effectively creating more friction.

Just like if you add a length of hose to the end of another length of hose, the water flow will be less. But this is happening over a shorter span.

As I'm not an engineer any more I need to get Sammy to check my theory.

Man up and drink it straight out of the tap.

0 mechanical or scientific acumen going into this, but...

Why doesn't your tap blow open? The pressure isn't that great.

I always assumed that the pressure behind the water < the structural integrity of the medium through which the water is filtered.

Nawmean?

i think i get it. the box is like an intestinal track, and to cover the extra distance the water has to slow down. kind of disappointing if this is true, figured it was aliens. sigh.

Re: The question of the day thread

Well the extra 'friction' causes the head/pressure to drop, but I think you've got the gist.

If it makes you feel better, aliens invented friction.

Re: The question of the day thread

it's because the filter allows the water to chose it's own gender so it gets confused and takes extra time to pick what it wants to be called
