bolts performance was most impressive. although it wasn't really an accomplishment as much as it was just having freakish genetics. but i guess the same could be said for any olympian. what was the point of my post

No one remembers any of Phelps WR times

Everyone will remember Bolts WR times 100m and 200m

No one says "the fastest man in water" when referring to Phelps.

Everyone will refer to Bolt as "the fastest man in the world."

Has a nice ring to it.

Also a side note, everyone in America knows Peyton Manning, best QB in the game. You would be hard pressed to find someone in Europe who gave a damn, and no one in Africa knows what American Football is. I imagine its the same with Phelps, probably a little more though, especially in Africa. Not everyone has good swimmers.

However, take Ronaldinho for example, everyone on the planet knows him because Futbol is played everywhere, religiously, except for USA. I would imagine Bolt is along the lines of Ronaldinho, everyone can run, every country has a track team. I'm sure he is more well known, so it makes his accomplishments more relevant, and makes those accomplishments more well known.

Oh yeah, and in China, Phelps gold medal count, and news headlines were on page 38 of the Bei Jing daily paper. I dont even know if anyone in China knows who he is.

Phelps by the slimmest of margins - just b/c he had more chances NOT to get it. He had to have things go just right 8 times (and 2 they almost didn't).

Interesting that (aside from prelims) Bolt's total time performing was 28.99 seconds. And I don't mean that in a bad way

i actually looked up the schedules and made sure i got to watch bolt run. phelps not so much.

phelps is good at swimming and all but i don't really care. it's a nice record to have but it doesn't make him the "greatest olympian of all time" or whatever he's calling himself.

if bolt also starts dominating the 400m as some speculate he will, he may well become the greatest olympian of all time.

What is your greater more better criteria for "greatest olympian of all time"?

Phelps worked about 50x harder for his EIGHT gold medals. Much more impressive to me.

Phelps is an American. The other guy's not. Easy game.

Phelps is more impressive.

Bolt's feat, while super impressive, is comparable to Phelps having set WRs in 100m and 200m freestyle events. Winning eight gold medals and setting WRs in 7 different events qualifies as dominance in swimming, as opposed to "fastest swimmer in a short race," which is essentially what the media labels "the fastest man in the world" when they talk about Bolt (and in the past, Johnson, Greene, etc.). I'd be more impressed if Bolt also ran hurdles and anchored a relay team, and since he doesn't (maybe he will someday? he is a fast nagger) I don't think it's fair to compare his dominance on the track to Phelps's dominance in the water.

Phelps' is probably more impressive. But I get the impression that he has no soul. His entire life is based on swimming. I'm not saying Bolt hasn;t worked hard because he clearly has, but when he comes onto the track he gives the impression that he is just there for the lulz.
