grunchin, i think you're wrong about the trail. vast majority of through-hikers go south to north. people generally start in georgia late march or early april and end in maine in late august or early september. i have not hiked the whole thing, but did a large chunk of it for 6 weeks last summer. there are a lot of people heading north, and you can easily make some friends who you will fall in step with and spends nights at a lot of the same campsites and whatnot. the sobos (south-bounders) that i talked to said it was much more solitary and they mostly just passed a lot of people who they never saw again.
doing a 500 mile section of the pacific crest trail in central CA this summer, am super excited about it. apparently there are no bugs and it rarely rains. perfect conditions for sleeping under the stars.
