when is it appropriate for a guy to tell you his name?

sometimes I'll drop it too soon, and seem too eager.

me: "hi!"
her: "hey?"
me: "how are you going?"
her: "not bad, yourself?"
me: "awesome! i'm zues!"

I don't think it's too bad, but sometimes it comes off a bit weird.

The reverse is so much worse though.

When you have a full on conversation with someone you meet, and don't get their name. Then you might see them again and not know their name, when you really should. In some cases for me (when i used to work at a shopping centre), I'd have like a dozen conversations with nearby retail staff and never know their name. so lame.

"Chief" is solid and I use it all the time. "Buddy" works in a pinch, too. But all females are "Posh Spice." It doesn't matter if it fits or not. They all like it. Girls are weird.

The first time you speak to a girl, or anyone ftm, if you haven't managed to say it by the time the conversation seems over, you can add, I'm [your name] by the way. Then smile, assuming you have nice teeth. Nice teeth/smile are essential. Or else you better have a very big bankroll [see also: philnewall].

However, in your case, if your name is Zues, you might just wanna lie and say JA.

my name isn't zues, but when I was waiting in line for a coffee the other day i was exchanging glances with this cute girl that was taking orders. when it got to me and i ordered my double espresso (true sign of a balla) and she asked for my name, i was SOOO close to saying zues but wimped out at the last second.

If Zues is your real name (anyone, here) then that's pretty unfortunate and I'd be inclined to change it (I wasn't born Joey, or Zues). As far as pretending that is your name, it suggests power/control issues.
