So, I left Canada for Minnesota yesterday about noon. First couple of hours where fine. Crossed the border after answering a few questions. I get over towards Flint Michigan as its starting to get dark and slush starts to fall out of the sky. About 2 hours later and driving by 4 or 5 accidents I made it to the other side of Flint and on to I 75 N.
Driving Driving and Driving some more, I finally get to the Mackinaw bridge at midnightish. I really don't ever carry cash anymore, I had to pull off to the side when I got to the toll booth and dig in my car. Luckily I found enough quarters to pay the bout $3.50 toll.
Then I drive some more, for those of you who have never been to the UP of michigan which is most of you, once you get past the mackinaw bridge there is nothing for about the next 3 hours heading west. My gas light comes on right as I enter rapid river MI, luckily there is a gas station with 24 hour pay at the pump. I go to fill up and the gas pump says network error, i try again same thing. So I go to another gas station down the road and try again and get some other error message, wtf. A sheriff was watching me the whole time. I get back in my car and drive down the road 15 miles to escanaba, he follows me. I stop at another gas station thats open, try to pay at the pump to no avail. I go in and try the atm and it says contact your financial institution. ffffffffffuuuuuuu.
I'm tired and frusterated and had a dead cell phone, cause i lost my charger. This is about 3 am, instead of finding a payphone and calling customer service, I say **** it I can make it to my grandmas house (which is vacant atm, but I knew I could get in.) I leave for my grandmas and the sheriff follows me again. Follows me 3-4 miles and goes by when I turn onto my grandmas dead end road. I go inside and 5 minutes later, the sheriff pulls into the driveway. I go back outside.
me: hey whats up
sheriff: who's house is this and what are you doing here
me: its my grandmas, im just checking on it and I'm gonna stay here, ive been driving all day
Sheriff: why did you stop at 3 gas stations?
me: cause apparently there is something wrong with my card and I thought it may have just been their pumps
Then the sheriff asks how I got in and I went to the front door and opened it. He shines his flashlight all around and tells me he is making sure I didn't break in cause my behavior at the gas pumps seemed suspicious and I had a out of state license plates. After I answered all his questions about my family and where my grandma was and takes down all my info. He finally says ok I guess you are not doing anything wrong have a good night and leaves.
I go back inside and try to turn on the heat. The furnace was turned off and I didn't know how to turn it back on. It was about 20 degrees in there. I say **** it. Went to the liquor cabinet and made a strong drink and drank that quickly to numb myself from the cold. Put my boots, camo jacket and winter hat on. Found every blanket I could, about 7 or them. Put a show on my laptop and went to sleep. About 10 hours later I wake up sweating, kick the blankets off only to realize again its about 20 degrees in there. I still slept great.
I get up and go to a payphone and call the bank customer service number. They told me they put a restriction on my card from use because it looked like fraudulent activity, since i normally use it once or twice a day and in the last 3 days I used it 5 times in toronto then at 3 more gas stations in Canada and a couple grocery stores then gas right when I got into MI but didn't put much in cause it was more expensive than it was in flint according to the interwebs and I'm a nit like that and again a hour later in a different place in Michigan then 3 hours later in MI again, but the last time I didn't think it was reading it cause the pump kept going back to the main screen so I swiped it 4 times before I realized that it worked the first time. Anyway after I confirmed with the bank that it was me using the card they took the restriction off, I got gas and drove another 7 hours to get home.
Cliffs: I drove over 900 miles to get home from canada
got stuck in bad traffic with slush falling out of the sky
I got my debit card shut off for potential fradulent activity half way home with no cash on me
Got followed by and then questioned by a sheriff at 3am as to why I went to 3 gas stations and then a random house out in the woods when I have out of state plates.
slept in a house with no heat when it was about 20 degrees in there.
got my card fixed and got home a couple hours ago.
I hate not having cash on me cos anything can happen. The worst for me is going to restaurants and not having cash to leave a tip. I feel like a total pleb asking them to add some money onto the bill for a tip so I can pay with my card.
