I have respect for the guy's abilities but absolutely none for his intelligence. Revered as one of the greatest sportsmen ever, the guy has the world at his feet and more opportunities to make money and go down in history than he can properly deal with.

Then he goes and does something really dumb like this. I love a smoke as much as the next guy but if I had this much riding on it I'd ****ing chew some gum or something.

If you ask me he's lucky he screwed up now when he's not in competition. It might smack some sense into him and stop him from ****ing up again when the stakes are much higher.

i dont know, its not even close to the same level, but i wrestled at a high level, and at least 75% of all the elite all-american wrestlers drank A TON, and a lot smoked. i know of a multiple time ncaa champion that did shrooms all the time, and more on phelps' level, a greco-roman world champ, joe warren, is in the middle of a two year competition suspension for testing positive for marijuana twice. obviously you dont want to be binge drinking the week of a major competition, but alcohol/drugs are more mentally destructive than physically for an elite athlete, in terms of killing your motivation to train. and those elite athletes are the strongest mentally anyways so they can get away with it.
