Glenlivet, in a tumbler on its own. Preferably with no water, but maybe a splash, but certainly no ice! If you can, find Talisker, 'tis good stuff!

but jameson 18 is pretty awesome

as for op, don't drink single malts with ice. there's no reason to do that unless you want to water it down and dull the taste - you may as well be drinking screwdrivers.

screwdrivers with scotch would be nice becuz they you wouldnt have to taste the scotch. which tastes like new jersey in a headlock.

It's traditional in Scotland to have some water mixed with the malt. Adding a small amount of water unlocks more of the complex tastes, try it it really is a different drinking experience. My favourite is on the rocks though, but you need to try with water.

My favorite whiskeys are:

Coopers 25 y/o
Talisker 16 y/o
Lagluvin
Glenkier Treasures
Caol Ila
Glemonrange
Laphoraig

I love single malts, I want to try them all eventually and im getting there!

Well, I guess I can comment on this...

None of these scotches are particularily interesting.

Johnnie Walker is a nice blend and is what it is... It is the coca cola of scotch. Nothing special but gets the job done.

Glenlevit is a readily available single malt. I don't personally like it much but single malts are all about personallity. Some people will like it some won't. I personally much perfer Glenfiddich. Again, just personal taste.

Macallan.. I can't comment here. Never had it. 10 Years leads me to believe that you should worry.

As for acquiring a taste. On the rocks dilutes the flavor a bit and makes it easier to drink. A splash of water will also help. "The water is not to dilute the drink but just to bring out the flavor". I have never really bought into that. I think that the water just dilutes it. Again, personal preference.

Once you aquire a taste, neat (or without ice) is the only way. It makes the flavors more apparent and really allows for everything to work much better.

I also think that scotch more than almost any other drink is very much polarized. Meaning that good scotch is really good and cheap scotch is absolutely miserable.

As is the case with so much in life, buy the best you can afford, try it out and don't let other people tell you what to like and not like.

Good Luck.

Listen BUCKO, first of all its JOHNNIE WALKER. And second, coca cola is the greatest soft drink ever invented ok? so dont call it "nothing special".

Yeah, where can I get some really high end cola?

Hmm, I suppose I'll keep drinking it on ice and try different bottles. It took me a really long time to acquire a taste for beer fwiw.

Wow, didn't expect the cola analogy to generate such debate. Use any analogy you want. Johnnie Walker black is average.

Basically everywhere. You gotta go with the classic though, or else you're gay.
