I happened to live in Australia back in 1996 during the time that your government forced its citizens to turn over the rifles and shotguns they had legally purchased. How did that work out for you? I'll let you do the research so that you can find out for yourself that property crimes, assaults, and other criminal activity have been on the rise ever since.

I was there when people had to turn over their guns. I saw the outrage. I saw the anger. I saw the protests.

I saw a government disarm its own people. To me, that's about as cowardly as it gets.

i am not a fan of gun culture other than for hunting and home protection.

i always wanted to get a bumper sticker that said "guns are for pussies" but was a afraid of the self fulfilling prophecy of getting shot by a pussy with a gun

That this webpage even exists makes your country pitiable.

That you try to defend such proliferation of guns makes you contemptible.

You blame the guns? Do you blame the knives for all of the recent stabbings in Australian schools?

The same thing that stops him from buying gas and pouring it all over the place and setting the gas station on fire, or filling the car up and driving it as fast as he can into the walmart, or from buying a TV and bashing a cashier over the head with it so he can take two more, or etc.

OP and other foreigners who know nothing about this country except what they have seen on TV, please let me know, without looking it up what percentage of people in the US own guns, and how many of these people are driving around doing drive bys and randomly shooting people.

This is precisely the debate gambit of Karl Rove and George Bush. Rather than debating the issue, you attack the person. How does it feel to be now practicing the argumentation that is precisely what you loathe?

You have fallen prey to the syllogism that the only reason to own firearms is to commit violence on other human beings. Syllogisms is a deeply flawed philosophical device. I am very much a utilitarian. The pragmatic fact is that having firearms, or any other specific tool has not a thing to do with murder rate. Americans kill because they are violent, not because they have a specific tool to commit violence. Bowling for Columbine reminded me of a story that Abraham Lincoln used to tell all the time. A farmboy runs into the house and tells his father that his sister and the neighbor boy have their pants down and are up in the hayloft and he thinks they are planning on peeing on the hay. The father pats the boy on the head as he rushes out to the hayloft and said "son you facts are right but your conclusions are all wrong". Moore lists off reasons that that guns have nothing to do with the murder rates in the United States and neither do violent movies, music, or video games. Somehow he then comes to the conclusion that since we have no idea why Americans are so much more violent than the rest of the world then we should just take away all the firearms until we do know. WTF??? It would be funny if it were not amazing foolish.

Proliferation of arrogance and contempt for other people is far more worthy of disdain sir. You are far better than this specific action.

Meh, their navy ain't what it used to be. Also, if you had ever seen the Patriot you would know that Cornwallis was personally flawed and Mel Gibson will save us.

This is obviously the fault of American culture leaching its way in in the form of rap music, crappy TV, and fast food.

I own all the scary looking ones and have rare alacrity at using them, but am a pacifist. I would never ever harm anyone exept under the most improbable and extreme of exigencies. Funny huh?

lol at hunting deer. with bare hands, ok. but with super duper rifle that has super duper scope while wearing camo and using binnoculars and a bunch of other equipment. too funny. that's like watching boxing but instead of two guys with gloves, one guy has a machine gun. tough men those hunters are. of course given how much of a fatass the average hunter is, i'm not surprised.

Most of my family are farmers. I had my leg pretty much ripped off in a tractor accident and everything. I was raised (razed) in the sub-urbs of North Florida though. I taught my kid brother to shoot a .22 when he was four. No exaggeration.

I think the original premise is that you must own a gun and a farmer to not be a coward though.
