Let me preface this by stating that I am a life time member of the NRA.

That out of the way , the real reason for the second amendment to our constitution is to prevent a despot from coming to power. The right to bear arms was created right after having gone to war with ourselves. We were ruled by England from afar and decided this was too much. It would be impossible for a dictator to rule the USA. It would also be impossible to occupy the USA. If a foreign power tried to land troops , they would be rebuffed on every street and lane. Don't believe a dictator could come about? If Nixon had decided to not leave office in 1974 there are rumors that the military might have backed him.

In Switzerland every citizen must complete military service and the country's armory is spread throughout normal people's homes over their fireplace. I myself live on 10 forested acres in the middle of nowhere , a firearm guarantees that nothing untoward befalls myself or my family. I am certainly not counting on the local police to take care of my security.

Prior to firearms people still killed one another. There was a case of a guy running through a mall in MN with a Samurai Sword and killing 8 people. You need to realize there comes a day when one isn't up to bodily protecting themselves or their family. A firearm makes protection possible when one lacks the physical wherewithal for such a pursuit. These things we have created due to our large frontal lobe and opposable thumbs.

Perchance people in OZ should embrace the advancements we have come up with and put down their fists.

I've had my CCW permit for almost 9 years now and won't ever give it up. I own many guns for protection, hunting and sport shooting. It's a shame that most of the people that are against guns are the idiots that know nothing about them.

So have hunting clubs when guns are locked away from ppls homes. The only reason you all want guns in your home is to keep you safe but if there is propers gun control then there is no need for you to have one at home. You use safetly as a reason to keep these un needed dangers in your home
