I think we feel safer in numbers so even living in an environment that is inherently less safe because of those numbers, we disregard it.
Living in a remote location, away from immediate help, one has to depend on one's own devices. The gun provides the sense of security that those of us living among lots of people believe we have.
I live in a neighborhood where I see gang symbols painted on walls around the fringes frequently now. I still walk my dogs every night after dark and although I don't have any guns now, I did until I sold them a couple of months ago. My hope is that I won't be bothered because of all the people within earshot around me.
And I didn't sell the guns because I am anti-gun now. I had a police-issued Remington 870 .12 gauge pump with a 20" barrel and a folding stock that a cousin really wanted so I sold it to him. The other was a 100+ year old Webley .45 revolver that worked and fired well but I just didn't want it any longer.
