Fwiw, I don't understand how anyone really let's themselves go to the point where they're obese. The health risks they incur are outrageous and no one should do that to them selves.
I think I understand why people give up when they get obese. It just gets to the point where losing all of the extra weight seems impossible.
Seems to me it's like this. Let's say you want to put a rock garden in your yard. So you order a load to be delivered on Saturday morning. You get out there and the pile of rock is much bigger than you ever imagined: in fact it's twenty feet tall. It would be pretty easy to say "F*ck it" and go back into the house.
I watch the Biggest Loser show on TV, and it's amazing how many of the contestants don't know how much they weigh before they get on the scale. Then they find out the truth and start crying because the realization hits them all at once. They are in serious denial.
Also the health problems incurred are not visible on the outside. You may not realize you're prone to having a heart attack until you have one. The symptoms of diabetes may go ignored for years.
Staying in shape is hard work, too. I've been doing it for 19 years and it gets tougher to keep my weight down every year. I gave up all sweets and drink only water, and I still have to exercise an hour a day to keep my weight down. So it's tough for a lot of people to stay skinny.
