Well, I finally threw in the towel, actually. It was a good run, but the Texas summer is upon us and there is no way for me to live out in that heat. I need air conditioning....even though my job still requires me to go out into the worst of the heat during the day. At least I can be comfortable after work and while sleeping.
So for the last week I was renting a crummy hotel in North Austin. It was properly the ghetto. Every time I went to the store I was approached by homeless crackheads and crack hos. I gave one of the crack hos a cigarette and she followed me halfway home. I had to make a detour so that she wouldn't know where I was staying.
But last night I finally rented a real place. I've got a room in a house with two other guys about my age. They are cool guys, one of them is from India and he works for Dell. The other guy has a cool job but I don't know exactly what it is. But he's a real active guy, does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and sky diving and all that stuff. If I stay here for a while we might have some good times. I've always wanted to go sky diving.
I really wanted to get my own apartment, but I'm still repairing my credit from some bad decisions. Some day I'm going to buy a piece of land and build my own home. But not in Texas. Definitely further north. Maybe Colorado.
Overall, I'd say it was a pretty good run. I lived in my car for about three months. The hardest parts were finding places to sleep, keeping the car clean, and finding places to wash. I'm sure I didn't take nearly enough showers for modern society's standards. But I didn't get one complaint about smelling bad. Degree turns up the heat so you don't have to. I forget their slogan.
What I'm most looking forward to is being able to cook on a real stove again. And being able to do laundry, but I really didn't mind using laundromats.
So, that's about it. I'm back to being a normal person. I wouldn't really recommend that anyone try going homeless. It's not for everyone and you need to have very little shame.
Here is a picture of my new room. I just moved in last night, so it's got a lot of debris. But the room came with a bed and a dresser and pretty nice flat-screen TV. I don't really watch it, but I'm about to go pick up an HDMI cable.
