The distance between 250k and 350k is much, much shorter than the distance between 0 and 100k.
This is 100% correct. Not to come off as a complete ass here, the opinions of people who make 50k a year simply do not come from the same perspective.
Making 30k and having a chance to make 70k is much much much bigger than from 150k to 250k. At 30k you're barely living. At 150k you can have most things in this world except you may have to wait a little bit for it every once in a while. As an example at 250k you can pretty much buy a brand new (reasonable) car and trade it in for the newer model every year, whereas you might do it every 2 or 3 years at 150k.
There comes a point where happiness is what is important in life and you're in the "sweet spot" in terms of how much you are working and how much you are making. Most people, unfortunately, never even get to this area. It's much easier to accomplish if you're spouse makes a decent salary, and in this case the OP's wife does pretty good too. All in all he's happy, he loves his family and like (liked?) his job and passed up on the 250k job that would make him miserable and have a soul-crushing commute. It's not even anywhere close to a decision and I'm surprised it was even considered, unless he was scared he was going to go from making 150k to zero by being laid off. Making 0 dollars WILL make you consider some weird things.
It may sound extreme, but would you consider moving to a small town in Alaska to make 500k a year but you have to commit to staying for at least 5-7 years? Some people would jump at the chance. I would laugh at it and say no. I dont' make anywhere in the remote vicinity of 500k, but I wouldn't give up my life, my happiness, my friends, my family for more money. I'm very much ok with what I make and what I have to give up to make it - almost nothing except an easy 40 hours a week.
OP - great thread BTW. I don't recall hearing about too many people who do better at work for not caring about what people think. I guess being a good guy to the people around you still carries some weight in this world. Most people wish they had a boss like that. At work, the little things really do count.
