Out with coworkers blowing off steam.

I may regret actions tomorrow but right now I do not. This guy is effecting 200+ employees and he has no ****ing clue what he is doing.

Right or wrong, he's getting scrutinized and exposed. Sure I'm gonna be a casualty, but I assure you that unlike him, I bring with me no collateral damage.

Don't want to get too much into politics here or why I am doing what I am doing...would rather keep it fun and superficial, but I promise you that my actions negatively effect no one but myself.

And to be completely honest, i doubt I will have trouble finding a new job. "Joe's" name in this industry is complete garbage. I have fielded countless calls of colleagues laughing at my company an asking why on earth anyone would hire him.

Oh, and he was escorted out by security at his last 2 jobs.

So yeah, I have no ****ing clue why he was ever hired. And yes, I am angry over it.

Don't get pinched by this clown. You're our last hope in this endeavor to overthrow the tyrannical "man". Hang in there for all of us

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed by that. I mean the previous posts you were messing with him in ways that he can't really complain about to his upper managers, but now your going out and yelling at him in meetings which obv looks way worse when he tells that is why he wants you gone.

I'm all for pestering him to give you more concrete plans on how to make the company effective (and then telling why all his plans suck).

I know I don't have the experience level as you, but I'd be honest as to why you snapped, but also apologetic that you put them in the spot they did, and made the situation worse than what it already was. You could use them as references at the very least.

I have to admit, KF, the last blow-up and the complaint about your "shoebox" (which seems to have a nice desk and an actual door...I can post a shot of my cubicle if it'll make you feel better) have knocked my attitude down a notch, from "actively rooting for you" to "just enjoying the trainwreck". GL in any case.

I officially do not understand corporate America.

They do not want to fire me. Quite the opposite.

Basically was posed this question: If we get rid of "Joe", will you committ to staying?

Now I have a real decision to make. I do not want to stay here. I do not want to give my word (even tho not legally binding) and then leave them in a lurch. Despite my feeling for what this company has become, I do not want to screw them over by making a promise I cannot keep.

I have a feeling Joe is out the door regardless, and they are just trying to get a commitment from me.

Sorta floored ATM and need to think about things.

Will update when I can HR is at my door lol. This may be interesting.

Ask for a pay rise if they're trying to get you to stay? Although I guess the fact the money wasn't a huge issue might make it trivial.

Hi King Fish! Lurker here but rooting for you! Love the story so far.

Their reaction here is totally standard. They now understand that Joe needs to go, but they need someone to stay and manage the stuff, if not in the future, at least for now. They don't want both of you gone at the same time, which will leave them with a whole lot of work (training, hiring, micromanaging, etc, etc). You giving them commitment essentially solves this problem for them for the time being, while giving them an option to replace you when necessary.

Furthermore, they feel that you don't think in those bargaining terms, so they're hoping that you may give your commitment, for reasons of loyalty to others, etc, for nothing in return (edit: or they quite wisely understand that you may perceive removal of Joe as compensation, even though they need to fire him much more than you do). Once you understand this, your next decision is very clear - you don't commit to them, you make them commit to you. Negotiate a significant package (beyond what you should be due for severance obviously) that is payable as long as you don't quit and payable immediately if they were to fire you, lay you off, or otherwise remove you from your duties.

The process of negotiation here will give you a lot of information regarding how desperately they need you, how long they need you for and/or how soon they were planning on replacing you. If you're gonna play the game, play it hard.

Wow. The reason HR showed up has me almost in tears.

Long story cut very short:

Apparently someone started a petition saying that people enjoy coming to work here because of me, they enjoy working with me and would be quite unhappy if I were to go, and they wanted an official document stating their support. According to HR, it has more than 100 signatures.

They basically told me that they know I am upset and implore me to please stick it out. That changes are coming.

I'm really just kind of shocked and emotional right now so gonna go take some time to think **** out.

And to candybar (if that is your real name), excellent post above. I will consider every word you wrote. Thanks much for your input.

Sorry folks if this thread is becoming a bit too real or bit of a downer or you think I am insane (and I may be)...initial intent was really just to blow off some steam. I wanted to keep it light.

Oh, and they are moving my office later today to a corner one. Heh.

Maybe George Costanza was on to something...

my two cents, stick it out if you have your coworkers support to that extent, it is a rare thing for people to actually do something like that imo

Wow. wowowowowwoowwoow. This is like a movie because it's so surreal. I have no idea what you are truly going through but I would be so touched to hear a petition for your support by your coworkers. So now that you know that you are supported from the top brass and all of the other employees, it's going to be very hard to do anything else other than giving 110% to the company and hit the ground running!

This so much. If you could get another >200k job offer or something similar/significant, even if ur not serious about taking it, that would do a ton for your leverage as well.

companies hate hate it when they know if they can someone a lot of other people are going to be pissed off...even if that was their original intention they definitely need to think this out now

They basically told me that they know I am upset and implore me to please stick it out. That changes are coming. Though companies do lie a lot when it is in their favor to do so it does not appear to be the case here IMO

Oh, and they are moving my office later today to a corner one. Heh. This is awesome since they would not do this just to let you go soon.

Maybe George Costanza was on to something...
I was in a similiar situation years ago when my supervisor was a real c**t and everyone put up with her **** except me who told her supervisors (owners of the company) that she was very bad for business as well as telling her she was an *******..they told me too to stick it out , changes were coming etc etc..they kind of kept their word and eventually made me the supervisor and moved her to another dept (HR).couldn't fire her since she apparently knew stuff about the owners that could ruin them..the fact that I was a moneymaker for the company and she was not was a major factor in listening to me...she was bad..

one story..she was my supervisor, I called in one day from the hospital to tell her I had a miscarriage (no one knew I was pregnant at the time) and that I would try and be in the next day or 2 at the latest..I came in the next day and she called me in her office (and had her supervisor with her) and wrote me up for breaking a company policy for not calling in between the hours of 7 am and 8 am when you knew you were going to be absent (I called at 9 the day before). when I realized what she was doing I stood up (the witness to this was shocked) and apparently had a look on my face like I was going to come over the desk to kill her..so she stopped the meeting and told me to go back to work..

some people are just not cut out for management..ever..and it is possible to change a company's dynamics so I am sort of hoping for you that you stay on awhile, make things better for everyone (who supported you) and maybe even make the place the kind of place you enjoy going to every day

GL...rooting for a very happy ending for you

OP,

I was in the same boat as you a decade ago, I do not make as much as thier offer but am payed over 6 figures. My family has grown to 3 kids and still doing the same mindnuming work as a product manager. This position is a million miles away from my dream job of professional baseball that never worked out.

Over the last decade i was able to change the culture of my department to something i can stomache. Job is not glamorous or exciting but provides my family with a comfortable and safe lifestyle.

There is a sense of relief you get as a parent and provider knowing that the ones you love are being taken care of...

I am over 40 with a mortgage, 3 kids, wife, dogs, etc, the advice i can give from my life is: provide for your family even if its not your dream job. Have hobbies for you that can offset the mindnumbingness of your work life, this will save you from anger and depression.

I play poker online and have season tickets to the miami heat. These 2 hobbies keep me sane.

I wish you the best of luck whatever path you choose.
