Well not quite the death penalty but your gonna be in real trouble if you get caught, for small amounts maybe a fine, and by fine i mean big bribe to get out and charges dropped. For large amounts and dealing then yes a long stay in the monkey house, a big fine and deportation with life ban from Thailand is most likely.
