I'm Ryan and I'm an Internet Sales Manager (car salesman) for a Nissan dealer in Northern California. I'm very successful and in the top 1% of all Nissan salesman in the country. It's a very interesting job and sometimes quite strange. The business has many misconceptions about the dealers and the people in it, but something's are true. I'm bored so ask any questions you may have.

Hi Ryan and welcome to the forums!

What are some of the most interesting and/or strange things that have happened during your wonderful career as a Nissan car salesman?

Well I work in Vallejo CA the city that filed Bk. nice place to sell, but horrible place to live.

One night around 7pm I closed a deal on a new Nissan Quest minivan. One if the last things we do is go fill it up with gas. I drive it to the gas station about a half mile away and it is a slow night. It's already dark and the lighting at the station isn't the best. I run the purchase order inside a out 30 feet away from the pump. From inside I noticed 3 young teens trying to climb inside the van. I run outside and scream something like get the fu*€ away from the car. They start to come after me until another person getting gas starts to walk over. They decided to run away. I thank the guy and start to pump the gas. As the tank is almost full, a Black Yukon comes flying into the gas station with rap music blaring. 4 black males are hanging out the windows screaming something that couldn't be understood. I get in the van to lock myself in, and watch them go inside and rob the station at gun point. I can't leave because I'm blocked in and frozen because I saw the gun. I realize that I left my cell phone at work. Finally they speed off and I run inside to see if the clerk is ok. He is fine, not really even shook up about the whole scary mess. Finally I head back to the dealership very frazzled and upset. When I arrive I see my customers standing at the door with their arms crossed looking upset. I get out of the van and the husband said "where the hell have you been" I explain what happened and they responded with "ya like I said, hurry up" I bit my tongue and tossed him the keys. Just another day in the car business!

Bluetooth is hands free, not steering

Cool story Ryan!

Have you received any strange offers in return for knocking off a grand or two from a vehicle's price?

If so, did you accept any of the offers?

How many times have you blown a guy in order to get him to buy a car?

All the time!!! People offer $100 to take off like $1,000-$2,000 off. What they don't know is that I make 30% of the profit so that would be a horrible choice for me. Dinner, free golf, Giants tickets work much better for what it's worth. On a new car that we usually give away anyway I'll take stuff from people. I only make $100 bucks on a new car unless there is at least $800 profit in it.

I know someone who just bought a used car with a warranty. Several days after purchasing it they took it to a mechanic who says it needs several thousand dollars worth of work. The dealership says it is not covered by the warranty. Are they screwed? Is there any recourse here for the buyer? How can a dealership do this and A) maintain a decent reputation B) live with themselves.

Ok after doing the maths I accept your answer as 35+ and you stopped counting after the first year.

Moving on, when selling a car do you prefer to prey upon single moms holding a tax refund check and a dream or just senile old people?

Few things:

Pot lot or legit franchise dealer that also sells new cars?

Contact the dealer and state what was claimed is wrong. Tell them that they need to fix it or get it covered by the warranty. If they refuse then its time to threaten action. No dealer wants to put up with a customer that keeps complaining. Contact the warrant company and state your concerns see if they will assist, they don't want you to cancel the warranty so they usually assist.

Yelp is a franchise dealers best friend or worst nightmare. I have an excellent Yelp and it sells me at least two cars a month.

Prey....lol

Older people are a nightmare.

Single mom without a third baseman (friend or family member or a know it all)

For what it's worth the customer lies to the salesman wayyyy more than salesman lie to the customer (myth busted lol)

Thanks, I will ask them about where they got it and stuff. As far as the warranty, I think it is only for like a month, so don't know if that will be a problem. When you say threaten action, what do you mean?

One month warranty usually isn't paid for, it's something from the dealer. THAT'S NOT GOOD! They usually don't cover ****!

People say they are going to contact Nissan or Ford or whatever the new car dealer is. Newspaper, Yelp. Nobody wants a pissed off customer

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Huge fan here as well. Sweet avatar by the way

Does your dealership offer promotions that involve the Niners or Giants?

Have you met any of the players because of your work? ie you accepted a VIP spot in return for a reduced price?

I bought a car in Cali last year. Flew in from Texas and drove it home.

We had an agreed upon price and everything was fine (besides being a nightmare dealing with the guy/dealership over phone), until he told me I had to pay a $300 "document fee". I believe that was the cost and fee.

Did I get bent over for a few extra hundred, or is it "legally required in state of CA" or whatever, as he represented to me?

I was pretty worn out and wanted out of this slime balls office, so after a little haggling I just said whatever and gave in.

My friend who is a pathological liar once worked as a car salesman and told me they trained him to screw over customers. Is that normally true?

Some stores still operate that way, but for the most part that is a thing of the past. There are still a lot of losers I the business that think lying is the easiest way to make a buck.

Good personality, honesty, and a decent price is the best way to sell. I sell lots of cars doing it the right way.
