Like the idea...

Are they still offering those 'create your own tournaments' in the store and if so, are you able to set your own payout structures in those?

If so, I would suggest setting one up at a buy-in level that's low enough to attract as many players as possible and really gauge player interest.

If you did this and got a big turnout, then Pokerstars are more likely to be willing to implement the structure to a few tournaments at various stakes and formats within the schedule.

Yes, the recs ROI would increase even though they are cashing only 10% of the time vs. 15-16%. I could prove it, but it would take me more time than I want to use right now.

Here is a chart I made showing a similar payout but with the pay jump ratios declining from top to bottom. Pokerstars has their ratios the same for most places before falling near the bottom. That is ok. I also show if you paid 16% but min cash was 3.5x. (the 3x in the chart is a typo should read 3.5x) The winner still gets almost 11% of the pool, but I suspect to most that will seem like too much of a drop even though if based on skill, then this 10.8% to 1st would be in line with the prizes given in other major large player field sporting events such as the 128 field Wimbledon tennis, the 28 car field Indy 500, and the 156 player field US Open Golf.

Ok, I did some math on this but I used a 6737 player field with 10k buyin and 6% rake and 15% paid with 1.5x min cash vs 10% paid with 5x min cash.

An average player will have an ROI of -6%. But the after tax ROI, based on USA tax rates would be -27.87%. With 5x min cash, 10% paid, the ROI stays the same at -6% pretax but is only -26.15% aftertax due to the flatter payouts at the final table.

A rec player with a -15.35% ROI under the 15% payouts, will have an after tax ROI of -34.4%. But this same player under the 5x min cash and 10% payouts will have a pretax ROI of -13.97% and an after tax ROI of -31.96% due to the flatter payouts at the final table.

39.18% of the total pool went to the final 9 when 15% were paid, and 26.16% of the total pool went to the final 9 when 10% were paid. 39.18% is a staggering percentage considering the final 9 only make up 0.134% of the 6737 player field.

Nice work RedOak!

Liked the 16% 3.5x min cash payout as well but obviously regs wont like it as the final table payout is too low but then theres no harm to have 1 or 2 tourneys with payouts like that. Also I think this payout would be more suitable for faster structures.

Regardless of ROI, Recs hate to cash for less then 2x the buyin.

Thank you OP for this thread!

Everyone hates a min cash for less then 2x the buyin,( exceptions being higher buyin events). People play tournaments to have their egos stroked, for the gamble and for the excitement.

The "yes" voters only saw the 5x minimum win and voted yes. Zero idea of the implications. Vote NO.

Would you enlighten us about the implications instead of arrogantly assume everybody that voted "yes" is ignorant about it?

The payout distribution in Multi-Table Tournaments has also been revised. It is always a very delicate balance to maintain; players love a big first-place prize and significant payouts for the final table, but nobody likes to make the money only to get close to the buy-in of the tournament. In the end, we decided that it makes sense to take a few percent from the final table, and redistribute it amongst those who cash for the minimum amount. Cashing in a tournament, even for the minimum, is a significant accomplishment that we wanted to be more highly rewarded.

Re: Would you ever play a tourney that pays 10% places but with min cash 5x times?

Sure I would play. Though maybe top10% paid with 4x mincash, leaving some money for payjumps to give play some meaning also pre-final table especially in larger tournaments would seem fine.

Entraction / IGT network actually had almost 4x mincashes years ago, they worked well.

Re: Would you ever play a tourney that pays 10% places but with min cash 5x times?

I don't like it. Payouts from 100th to 13th aren't even double. And I have to disagree with the idea that players would get excited about a 5x min cash. If you are playing with idea that a min cash is exciting then you are probably a loser anyways. It's the win that gets people excited so let's keep the money there.
