The best and fastest way to practicaly learn about ICM assuming you´ve read and understand the theory behind it is...

1. Run dif scenarios, many FT/ICM spots
2. Run dif scenarios, many FT/ICM spots
3. Run dif scenarios, many FT/ICM spots
4. Run dif scenarios, many FT/ICM spots
5. Then run some more

I would also include ICMizer, if your just starting out and have never used any of these programs i would go with ICMizer cuz the interface is a lot more user friendly and they also have a "SNG Coach" type of quiz feature with a bunch of ICM scenarios and help you a ton with ICM a lot more faster than HR imo.

And CREV is a decission tree based software, is a great piece of software but i think is way too advance for someone that is asking to learn about ICM, dont get me wrong, i use CREV to run EV calculations using several lines it helps me determine which is better/more optimal but for a guy that is just starting out i think sticking with ICMizer and abusing the software and particulary the SNG Coach feature is best at this point.

Which is the best for MTT approaching the bubble paying 15 to 35 spots and being able to put the payouts and how many spots pay in?

ICMizer, I looked around without an account and didn't see where to put in payouts and how many spots it pays and I am not sure if Holdem resources calculator would be helpful for what I am looking for.

HRC got a MTT feature since the last updates (~6 months) where you can type in any stacks up to several tables, so you can see what your playing style should be with a lot of short stacks at other tables. But I don't know if you can type in that much paying spots.

@ OP
PT4 also has ICM function where you can do a quiz and look into your HHs to determine if pushes were + or - EV

Id go with ICMizer much easier to see a lot of hands quickly. See how certain ranges impact each other, find inflection points. Think about weither the dynamics you try to model is a reasonable one. Learn and use FGS. Pay attention to umexploitable spots and know them by hearth... Spend lot of time analyzing and not just reviewing.

There is many more but it should be enough to begin with. Good luck!

Nice question. This is something I have been thinking about too (ICM is a relatively new thing for me).

1) Learn what risk premium is and how to guestimate it.

2) Learn how Risk premiums alter our ranges.

This should be more benificial than just running random spots in HRC IMO where we get to see the results, but not the underlying factors which create said results.

Why are people who do chip ev calculations constantly using calculators for ICM decisions? It seems like a group that can totally think it through to a binary choice between any two of the three options (call, fold, raise). The main adjustment in thinking is to replace payout values with the chip ev. Its not your betsize that you are risking as potential loss, but some amount of equity in the difference between payout positions. Spots which stand to put your up a few spots but not down a few are good where ones which put you down a few spots but not up are bad.

Anything more than this is like putting a ton of time in to spots that are nearing fair odds. Sure, it results in being super tight when position change is negligible. But this makes sense since is the same reason you don't merge your range in a hand.
