Open Faced Chinese Poker

Hey y'all, we've been playing this game the last few nights and it's awesome. I first heard of it about a month ago from Travis Pearson, says they're playing this new variant of Chinese in France. You get five cards, the game is positional, and you must set your hand card by card face up. 13 imaginary slots like on an iPad. If you're legal you play Chinese, if you foul then you get scooped. Two fouled hands push.

A week later I saw PeachyKeen and Bari? awesome dude from Germany, cash pro who's a lagtard with a plan. They were playing standard Vegas scoring, but you only start with three cards. Saw a sick hand where Bari had a boat, trip nines, and a pair with one card to go. He ripped the case nine for quads and a foul.

Played it a couple nights this LAPC with that scoring, awesome game. Joe Tehan played a bunch, sat at Shaun Deeb's table day 1 of the main. Shaun said the game is awesome and the scoring is different. Recalled from Joe, this is Shaun's scoring.

1-6. One point for a win (two of three), six for a scoop.

Royalties in the back:

Straight: 2
Flush: 4
Boat: 6
Quads: 8
Straight flush: 10
Royal flush: 20

Any of those hands in the middle are doubled.

Pairs up top 66+ are royalties

66 is worth one, each rank above it is +1, therefore AAx up top is a royalty worth +9.

He never defined what trips up top is worth, we're calling it +20.

Edits please Shaun?

We've played this scoring system tonight, lots of swongs, lots of fun. Enjoy.

Sickest hand we've seen yet, worth 26.

Shaun's variant also plays 5 cards to start and seems better.

Re: Open Faced Chinese Poker

trips 222 goes up to 10 and so on in the front. Also I havent played it but discussed with someone the idea of crisscross hu 2 hands each seems to be a great style for it.

Also devo didn't add the scoring is like 1-6 chinese no extra win bonus point as well as royalties always count so if opp has a fullhouse in back and you have a flush he only gets 2 ponts (+6-4)

Re: Open Faced Chinese Poker

This is the only actual version of chinese poker. Fwiw it's pretty much the national game of Finland, it's been played here before I was born and people have all kinds of simulation tools to come up with best lines etc. The game is really sweet. Anyone who plays the "closed" chinese is obv a tool it's just like flipping a coin basically.

Also you're forgetting about the 2s rule

Re: Open Faced Chinese Poker

Nah, Russian Poker afaik is closed hand Chinese, each of the three hands is worth one point, best hand of all players wins the pot for each hand. Therefore, 4 handed, if you win one of the three hands, you win one point. Two is 5, and three is 9. Royalties and naturals play. It's great for a situation where you don't have a table, such as grinding online in a hotel room in Reno or flying in a Cessna.

Same for scoops if you have the 2s anywhere

There was a big strat thread at the finnish forums recently where a super smart guy built a simulation tool and gave strat advice. It turned out that 3flush and 3 straights at the start are underrated. Like if you have a small pair and 3 small suited cards it's better to play it 3flush-pair-x (or similarly 3straight-pair-x) or even break the pair for a 3flush instead of going pair+card-card-card. A lot of other stuff too that really blew my mind.

Also apparently the way you should build your hand in pos matters a LOT more than people think and you should avoid auto-piloting. Example from the thread was that if you have 2256A, 56A being rainbow in pos,

Against JQ3s 86, you should make your hand traditionally: 225 – A6 –

But if he has 88T A K, the correct way to build your hand is quite shockingly (imo) 56 – 22 – A

Another fun game for traveling is the "Vaasa" chinese. I'm not sure if this is how it got invented, this is just the story as I've heard it.

Two finnish highrollers were on a plane going somewhere. It was almost fully booked so they couldn't get seats next to each other to play chinese. What they did was split the deck in half so they both have 26 cards. They spent the flight forming 2x 13 card chinese hands that would play criss cross against the other guy's hand with astronomical stakes. It's a pretty epic leveling game but it hurts my head so much.

Re: Open Faced Chinese Poker

Come on let's discuss chinese more!

I just heard of "Narnia Chinese": if you make a pair of 7s in the front hand (the 3 card hand) you get to go to Narnia for the next hand. That means you get to play it as closed chinese, having 13 cards dealt face down that you can organize after your friends have played their hands regularly as open chinese hands. If you make 7s with the deuce of spades (7-7-2s) you get to go to Narnia for 5 rounds. Same bonuses apply for those in Narnia = great fun!

Re: Open Faced Chinese Poker

Also forgot to add that these are included in standard (Finnish) open faced chinese rules:

Flush-flush-flush: 25p
"The turd" (AKQJT - 98765 - 432): other person wins your bankroll, or in kids games, 100p.

Wow the page with the mile long analysis seems to have been removed the author probably didn't want too many people to learn and decided to take it back. Fml for not having it saved anywhere it was pretty epic

If it was a page you might want to try the nternet wayback machine, if it was a forum thread then there is hardly any use. You could try google cache..

Sorry, I don't understand the rules. You only get 5 cards or you get 5 cards at a time?
