That's not true, with appropriate graphics card and displayport-output u can feed a 30" monitor @ native resolution w no problem.
I have my laptop (HP Elitebook 8740W) docked and can use up to 4 external displays. (I think total max res is capped @ 3 x 2560x1600 though)
Lappy itself has 1 diplayport (+1 VGA) and docking station has 2 more displayports (+ 2 DVI's). GFX-card is Ati Firepro M7820.

To drive a 30-incher @ 2560x1600 res u can use anything w Dual-link-DVI or Displayport.
Dual-link-DVI's are basically non-existent in laptops but displayports can be found e.g in MBP's and Dell's and HP's higher-end-laptops (mostly business-models).
Cheapest laptop w displayport will prolly cost around $1K.
For example, this -> http://shopping1.hp.com/is-bin/INTER...mpTo=OfferList

Interesting. First time I've ever heard of display port.

If I buy a laptop, I can connect 2 monitors to that? I have a 24" and would like to buy another +24" monitor and a new laptop. I can connect them all? It's a hard setup to make?

They are somewhat rare i.e pretty much non-existent in consumer-laptops.

Re: ***Official Laptop/Monitor/Computer/Grinding Equipment Discussion Thread***

Need some help with graphic card/s vs buying Displayport to DVI-D active cable please. Might be a no brainer but wanted to check!

Running usual 2x dell 2007fp in portrait @ 1600 x 1200 with a 30" landscape @ 2560 x 1600 in the middle.

Got two choices
1. Can run 3 monitors off newish Radeon HD6850 1Gb DDR5 (DVI-D, DVI-D, DP, HDMI). Need to buy DP to DVI-D active adapter (no DP on 30")
which is...
2. Same price as Radeon HD5450 1Gb DDR3 (DVI-D, HDMI, VGA)

Got a 750w Modular PSU and 2x PCIE slots so thinking I have power and bay space to run two cards rather than a converter cable. May add HDMI TV so may benefit from the extra output with two cards(?).

Planning on hooking 1x 2007fp and 30" to the HD6850 and 1x 2007 to the HD5450 all by DVI-D.

Anyone foresee any thing catching fire / frying if i go for the two card option?

Thanks in advance

I've just recently bought a new PC and I got that exact card - Radeon HD6850 (using 2 x DVI and the DP to DVI active adapter). The adapter / set up was temperamental. I had trouble getting the 3rd monitor to 'activate' and at times the adapter needed to be pulled out and plugged back in to make it work. My PC guy (who was very good) tried all sorts of stuff and couldn't get it going.

I'm just about to have the card replaced with 2 x nVidia cards so I can run all 3 monitors on DVI without an adapter. Your PC won't catch on fire (lol). 2 x cards is common. My old PC had 2 x entry level nVidia cards and they worked perfectly.

I want to build a PC strictly for poker. I'd be playing no more than 16ish tables on a few different sites, with HEM2 and possibly TableNinja with no non-poker programs running. I'll have one 20" monitor with the possibility of an additional 20 or 24 inch in the future. Can someone recommend components for my application?

this. You don't need a powerful desktop to play max 20 tables on different sites.. Any new desktop and most new laptop will do

I have a laptop but I'm not sure if it suits my needs. It has a Core i3 2.2 GHz processor and 4gb ram which can be upgrade to 8gb. If this doesn't work I'd rather just build a PC since I can get components for less than a new laptop.

I have a Sony VAIO with the same specs and it starts lagging if I'm playing mass tables (16+) and HEM. My computer lagged considerably with HEM2 - but only tried it in the beta phase and not sure if they fixed the performance issues.

Since then I've built a desktop with an SSD and its ridic difference in performance.

Current build is

750w Corsair PSU
64gb Crucial SSD
ASUS P8P67 LE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 motherboard
Intel i5 2500k 3.3ghz
8gb ram
ATI radeon 6870
RAIDMAX|HELIOS BK ATX-819WB tower

I initially bought a DIY bundle from newegg that was on sale but the PSU was cheap and dead on arrival so I decided to upgrade a few components - I bought a 750w in case i wanted to add another another Radeon 6870 for crossfire and I opted for the SSD. I have a fairly large HEM database and the reports are nearly instant. Computer boots up relly fast maybe ~15 secs. I have a 2TB external HD I use for all media.

The i5 2500k CPU is a nice sweet spot for price/performance in the intel lineup and can be overclocked with stock cooling. The raidmax case case comes with 4 extra fans and I've managed to overclock to 4.2ghz with the built in mortherboard utility. This doesn't really matter for poker but if you want to squeeze every bit of performance out of the CPU.

If you aren't going to do any gaming you can get a cheaper video card and lower wattage power supply. Also 8gb ram isn't really neccesary but I'd recommend it. If you have any questions about the build process shoot me a PM.

Amazon also got the full range, cheaper models if you don't need the warmer.

Or wait til you got £250-£300 for a used Aeron.

I guess so, but if by 24"+ u mean u might get anything w bigger resolution than 1920x1200, make sure the laptop has displayport.

What laptops u considering? Also, what monitors?
