New released MTT course by Upswing

Upswing just released an MTT course featuring Doug Polk and Pratyush Buddiga.

Does anyone plan to buy it ?

Can we get some reviews on it ?

Re: New released MTT course by Upswing

Haven't had time to do it yet, but I plan to watch this in the near future. Pratyush is an endboss so I'd expect this to be top notch material. Also if the course is Prat and Doug discussing hands/concepts whatever dynamically instead of the more traditional approach of just one instructor talking, then that's super awesome. I'd pay to listen to those two talk about poker even without it being an MTT-specific course.

[Full disclosure: I write articles for Upswing but I'm not affiliated with them in any way as I'm just a freelancer]

Yeh, it said just 30 hours of videos, but I am going to buy it, because I assume anything Upswing does is top notch. I should probably get their cash game course too, even though I don't play online cash.

Re: New released MTT course by Upswing

It is mostly theoretical discussion by Pratyush categorized by street and tournament dynamics. Then there is a section where he goes over his hands categorized by situation. There is also a series where Polk goes over his WCOOP ME 2nd place.

I have only watch a little of it, but it seems worth the price for me.

I was doing some light research on the course today and found a Facebook post that linked to a statement by another player/ coach / company regarding Pratyush / Doug's course.

Re: New released MTT course by Upswing

To give a little fuller review. The discussion of how to play all sorts of situations, such as weak lead on turn and 4-betting preflop is useful. For the Polk deep run, he discusses part of it with Pratyush and part with Brian Fee. I like the more slickly made short videos compared to the long poorly prepared videos from the sites that charge by the month.

The section on playing the bubble is weak/tight. For example, it says that the big stack can 3-bet a mid stack open with ATC if the mid stack has not tightened his opening range and there is nothing the mid stack can do about it. If the mid stack knows that is what the mid stack is doing, the mid stack can push with whatever he opened with. The min cash isn't that mid a deal if you have like 12x buyin, unless it is a small tournament that pays like 5 places and the payouts are close.

It suggests always doing certain things and never raising certain flops and so on. IMO this should be taken with a grain of salt, as you want to play unpredictably.

Some of the discussion is GTO and balance oriented, similar to Polk's youtube videos and much of the RIO elite stuff. It tends to assume you are playing good regs. This doesn't fit with most of what I play, $30-100 MTTs and Sunday majors, with large numbers of amateurs and weak regs. It really doesn't discuss much about how to exploit those sorts of players. If you are do not at least play mid to high stakes, some of the discussion may be too high stakes oriented.

What do you mean by spoil? I can't damage the course. I watched some bits and pieces and provided a review to give people some idea of what it is like. Do you prefer to buy it with no idea what is in it?

I definately think bencbs course is worth the money for me. It´s too complicated to answer for any other person, but that should give you a hint.

I assume that means you are good. The description of the material looks really good for the bencbs course. It seems more technical into reshoving ranges, ICM , and so on. I guess I will get both courses.

I guess I am still the only one to comment on the Upswing course, but it seems a little cash player style and postflop oriented, not surprisingly given who runs Upswing. It has videos on each type of situation on each street. I am reasonably happy with it though, and am going to try to watch all the videos.

Re: New released MTT course by Upswing

I guess I am still going to be the only one to comment much, but I got the Raise Your Edge Apprentice Class and I like it much better than the Upswing one. It discusses how to play various situations, typical leaks, and so on. I got the Apprentice Class, and will probably eventually upgrade to the Master Class. I will also get the cheaper turbo 6-max SNG class. Although I can't play on Stars, it should be useful for my specialty of SNGs and turbo MTTs. I did feel that the RYE Apprentice was, like the upswing class, somewhat lacking in short stack and tournament strategies issues, but that may reflect my perspective, as those are areas I am more familiar with.

The Upswing class is good in discussing handling various postflop plays and in hand analysis. However, I found some more tournament strategy portions that I was not impressed with. There is a section on stalling, which he recommends. Someone made a comment in that section that he wanted his money back. The comment was removed, and I assume he got a refund. The video recommends stalling as a medium stack on the cash bubble, as you can be taken advantage of by large stacks. It doesn't mention stalling in satellites, which is a situation where medium stacks often should stall.

In the section of final table play, the Upswing class only discusses push/fold issues. Presumably, you are often deeper. It says that people make the mistake of not calling pushes as tight as ICM software recommends. However, the software does not consider the advantages of being able to play aggressively with a big stack after doubling up. The video also says that you should push extremely light as opponents can't call. However, if people in practice are not calling so tightly, and some opponents are probably randoms who don't know too much about ICM, then maybe it is not correct to push so loosely.
