New BB / Button ante system - Thoughts? New BB / Button ante system - Thoughts?

Seems as though the BB ante is soon going to become the norm across the poker world and I wanted to see what people thought of the initiative and what the key considerations are.

Shoving ranges for shorter stacks will presumably change now for example.. so will calling ranges.

Do we think this is a huge game changer for MTTs?

Whys that then? It makes no difference to ranges at all. Played a few live button/big blind ante live tournaments they speed up the game with no downside so whats not to like?

The only time it matters significantly to range is for very short stacks, you should be shoving wider before your BB, because you are going to lose a bigger chunk of fold equity at once by posting both the BB and the ante simultaneously.

Exactly.. I think it affects stacks around the 8-12 BB range in the UTG, UTG+1 and maybe +2 range quite significantly.

I think it's a good innovation and am all for speeding the game up but I think ranges do change slightly in these specific situations

Am i the only one on this planet that likes the old school placing antes by all players??
How much faster is the bb/btn ante system??1-2 secs per hand??
Haven't played yet.

It's not so much that it's faster to place and collect the ante. If everybody just puts their ante in when the dealer is shuffeling you are correct and it would only be a few seconds.. Unfortunatly more than half the time somebody forgets to put an ante, only has bigger nomination chips that need change, etc.. There is where you win time with only one ante seat.

Hustler changed it to Button Ante for their weekly MTTs.
I usually go deep/final table before, and now I am floundering in about 5-6 MTTs in a row.

Went deep again in the two day $150K during their Spring Poker Classic with the ante system.

Clearly I am doing something wrong.

BBA requires very little adjustment unless you are a habitual short stack nit. I found the play to be faster. Also with less dead money in the pot, the tournament plays out a little longer. (At least that is what happened at Lucky Chances where the ante was always equal to the BB.) Both of these things help increase the skill factor.

One reduction in skill is that the per level aggression micro-adjustment based on the relative size of the antes to the BB goes away. I didn't miss it.

While I agree that the Button Ante idea seems a little fairer, it has the practical disadvantage that hands with dead buttons happen but dead big blinds never happen. Also a good TD is adept at respecting the BB position as the tables get balanced and so that dovetails nicely with BBA too.

I like BBA and will try to get my local card rooms to adopt it.

Sorry if it was mentioned above.
So what happens when the table is no longer let say played 9 handed or so? Let's say the tournament is 9-max and we are playing FT Bubble therefore 5handed. Is BTN or BB is still charged full ante as in 9-handed?

At DTD for example in a 9 handed mtt if it goes down to 6 players or less the ante is reduced to a small blind. I think thats the norm but also played at Genting casino recently they just introduced it who keep the ante the same amount regardless of players for consistency. Reducing the size of the ante with less players makes the most sense to me.
