I think Timex and Buck21 have quite big stables I understand.

timex was getting out of the staking game, idk if he actually did.

I know of at least one backer (not group) whose on a 2mil downswing after giving a bunch of his horses 65/35 (in horse favour) in big live events

JJ doesn't stake anymore. JJ had ~1.5m makeup if you count money stolen from him. My final makeup number with him was 674.4k.

did you have 700k w/ someone else or was -1.3 just your worst valley? And you donked off all of JJs money to ivey in the thunderdome right? LOLZ at JJ using his entire roll to stake someone vs ivey in the thunderdome. Edge or not ( my money is squarely on not) it's still ******ed variance. Nice Tilt, JJ.

I don't know your situation, but if you were to hit a big score now, would you feel any obligation to pay any of it back ? And if so, how much. Struck me as an interesting ethical situation.

I'd rather not get too far into this on a public forum. However, JJ doesn't "tilt." He's just super degen, and he never really had means of cashing out of any of the sites, so he just kind of ran it up until busto always.s. The money just never was real to him, obviously. He never cashed out anything from an online poker site except for the partypoker waybackk in the day (that was before I ever even talked to him and I never even played partypoker myself.)

The sites really did do a good job of security in the end...I mean, JJ obviously can still play on pokerstars/FTP/cake or w/e pretty easily and theres NOTHING the sites can do. But the sites security cracking down, and finally doing the ban of people associated with him, make it so he can't stake people online, and cashing out/transferring impossible.

I'm personally very thankful for the security crackdown by online poker. Makes 674.4k makeup poof! Ivey style!

Wait, so who's making money if everyone here is apparently in makeup and everyone staking is owed makeup?

i'd rather lose my 674k to ivey then have security seize it.

I've won JJ a couple hundred K before the highstakes downer, and he bought 250k makeup from another backer at a discount so its not NEARLY as bad as it looks. However, JJ did help me a lot in my poker career and is a good friend, so I would love to pay him back like 200-300k if I ever hit a mill or 2mill ball score n call it even. I loaned JJ 40k for Australia when he was stone broke, and he binked that PLORebuy. However, JJ would never accept any money from me if I offered it to him for the makeup. He's weird. He views the makeup as like a prized possession of his past, and he's moved on and learned, and looks to be a successful live pro now.

This...the figures in this thread are minor compared to some live-only relationships, where's it's super easy to go on a 500-600K downswing. Multiply that by x-horses and imagine the brutality. I know of at least one person who cleared a number around that amount with a wsop win last year (for those needing inspiration). And I've heard of one weirder/rarer situations in which a horse had 7-figure makeup and quit.

why do backers have horses that they dont fully trust, or is that impossible in this game

Interesting. About 1/3 - 1/2 the makeup is what I came up with when I tried to envision myself in a similar situation. Which is pretty much the 200-300k for you.

drunkenone,

Staking is done often with people you only know over the internet, or met at a few live tournaments and mostly among young kids with too much money. Sadly quite a few people take advantage, or end up stuck in makeup not making moeny and decide scamming/stealing is the easy way out.

Yep, and you forgot to mention that a lot of time the people being staked are legitimately BUSTO. Like, need to go work at MCDs/kicked out of mom's basement/food stamp busto. When you are that busto, and you are a "pro poker player" and you are "deep in makeup" i mean....ldo they are gonna steal from you. The point is to not let yourself get in that situation with lowlives like that.

even then you still can get scammed, i know of at least two horses who had 6fig scores after a meh run, and rather than pay back makeup and end up with much less just took the money and either disappeared or ''lost'' it playing highstakes
