I don't play that much. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The sickos who play 50+ MTTs per day have bad ROI, around 10%-11%. The guys who play less games pull around 30% ROI, plus by playing fewer games you are more likely going to play a style that is much more fun to play instead of the ABC poker that mass-tabling forces you to play.
Of course, the volume is very important when it comes to this, but also your ABI is important, your skill, the style of play, the game selection etc.
I used to play 10 tables on average before but for the last 5ish months I have to dropped to 6 tables max and it increased my ROI drastically.
You need to game select properly, have a mix of small to big field tournaments in your schedule. The small fields are your bread and butter games, and the big fields give you random binks that spike your winnings when you get a small heater.
I find that the more time I spend improving my game, the more consistent the results are.
If you want to maximize your ROI you need to practice playing maximum exploitative strategy because in practice GTO is going to drag you down in MTTs, I've tested it for almost a year and that was the worst period of my career. If you try to play balanced strategy you are only begging to get fcked by variance. If you play super exploitative it is very likely that nobody is going to notice it because people hate to deviate from their default strategy whatever it might be.
So all in all, yes it is possible to make $40k+ a year playing MTTs and you don't have to be playing the high stakes for that either, can be "easily" done at low/mid stakes.
