Just a thought, how frequently would you raise and pick your spots vs players on the blind who dont defend their blinds much and/or are short stacked? Is this a profitable spot to raise with a wide range of hands no matter the position?

It really depends on the other players at the table. If everyone else is a loose fish or good LAG prob not opening too wide. If everyone else is playing nitty then we can definitely look to open up our ranges. I wouldn't raise complete junk, but we can certainly incorporate more suited cards into our raising range that we might fold on a loose table.

It really depends. Let's say we have 2.5 BB in the pot (including antes) and you sit at the small blind. If you minraise, you are putting 2BB for a possibility of winning a pot of 4BB. Even if you lost the hand every time you got called/raised, if the big blind folds 50% or more, it's totally worth it!

Add to that the fact that every hand has some equity, and not all the hands you will raise are trash, and blind-stealing becomes a very profitable action!

But of course, most of the time someone else would have raised (maybe knowing the high profitability of blind stealing, specially at later stages of tournaments, or maybe because they have a great hand) Also, players who are aware of what you are doing will 3bet from the big blind a good amount of times. So, as it's so often the case in poker, balance is the key point!

Anyway, as a quick reference, if the everyone folds to you and you are not raising at the very least 50% of the time, you're probably doing something wrong!

Stealing from the button, cut-off and earlier positions in another story, though. More players will be able to face you, so we should keep our ranges tighter (even though it is true that we will be in position if we get called).

Also, in earlier stages, players will use bigger bet-sizes than a minraise, so we would be also assuming more risks

Very well said I agree with all of it! But to move away from raising in the small blind I do think this can be very profitable if you just choose yours spots no? Even if your in late position (HJ,CO,BU) you don’t have to worry about too many players and can have a pretty wide range if folded to you. If the blinds are weak tight players of course. But what would you say about 3 betting EP, or MP players? Do you think they are looking at the blinds thinking they can steal with a raise? Should we keep an eye on them and maybe 3bet them light more frequently with a wide range?

You shouldn't open as many hands from the button or cut-off as you do from the small blind, but still, you should play a lot of hands from these late positions.

Early and middle position players raise tighter ranges. The fact that they can win a few (or a lot of?) chips if everyone folds is a factor to take into account, but not as important as in LP. Think, for instance, about how you'd feel about a wide(50%)-range call on each case
