Shouldn't night at 7:00 mean at 7:00:00 it is night?
I agree with this, but it probably isn't worth confusing everyone by changing, just to get a somewhat more sensible (but theoretically irrelevant) treatment.

So just out of curiosity I went and took a quick look to see what kind of night posting is actually happening. Mainly because I wanted to know how many fouls to expect. I may expand this but I looked at 5 vanilla games and 2 giant mishmashes, everything is within the last couple months.

- I didn't look at late game days for every game so the numbers are mostly reflective of early game where there's the most players, i.e d1-d4
- Of 22 EODs, 10 of them had at least one post after :00 (7 if you take out the giant games)
- There was no EOD with more than 2 posts after :00
- There were 14 total instances of night posts
- All posts occured at :01 (there were no :02 posts)
- :01 posting seems to occur a lot on d1/d2 and very little after that in the games where I went to n5 or later

My takeaway is that if we give a foul for :01 posts we'll be writing up a handful per game, but again comparing them to like penalties or fouls in sports that doesn't seem shocking, and I don't see any indication that doing so is going to force us into making overly harsh modding decisions.

edit: also 10/22 sounds impressive but when you consider the sum of players alive at each night it's about 300. 14 night posts out of 300ish opportunities

Dammit VR - people were finally starting to forget!

mets I know your answer

I'd like to consider this case separate from gimmicks in general since opinions seem fairly split on the gimmick question, but this specific scenario seems to me like something it would be reasonable to just ban

It would not preclude people from playing on gimmicks, nor would it require such people to out themselves, just not to deliberately mislead about their experience level
Um, definitely not.

WW is full of lies and pretending to be new is one of them, imo.

Well that's not really that many. A few posts that may have been off by 10 seconds or so over the currently accepted threshold? Why make a rule and track it at all? Whatever we have in place is clearly already working.

As you said in an earlier post it's not like calling posting at :01 a foul is going to stop people from posting what they want to post - so then why track it?

Let's remember the gist of how this all started. It started because posters asserted that some people were purposely ruining the games and making them less fun. It's evolved certainly from there but I don't think a few :01 posts is ruining the game for anyone.

I looked at HP4 earlier and there were 5 night posts in the first 2 days and gabe is hypermegaelite at locking the thread promptly.

Yes, it's very strange that we are focusing so much energy on a "foul" that is usually inadvertent and usually causes no damage to the game's integrity.

The biggest werewolf problems we have are:
  • Players being *******s to other players.
  • Players being *******s to mods.
  • Players blatantly, intentionally disregarding important rules like those covering out-of-thread communication.
  • Players consciously playing in a way that isn't designed to win the game in question.
  • Players subbing out for game-related or role-related reasons (I guess — I don't know that this is happening but enough people say it is that I assume there's some of it.)
  • Mods not keeping a handle on their games, including making bad rulings without thinking about them, and doing nothing at all about problems when clearly they should.
These are problems that are both serious and common enough to warrant concern.

Absolutely not.

I don't even think it should be considered an "etiquette" violation. I don't personally do it but I don't agree that it is absolutely clear that doing it is wrong. (I do admit that it exacerbates the information asymmetries, I just don't think there is consensus that it's unacceptable, notwithstanding that.)

Yes, quite strange that someone would think intentionally breaking a clear, explicit rule is different from intentionally breaking a social norm that isn't universally accepted.

If this means what I think it means, then this is exactly grounds for it being considered an "etiquette" violation. I'm just talking from my own perspective here, but when I join a ww game I join to put in effort and give it as much attention as I can, even though I'm usually busy IRL. I don't want to spend a lot of time on a game where other players have a non-disclosed advantage over me, effectively making me waste my time, seeing as I am reading their posts with a false idea of who they are. I do not propose that there should be a rule against these gimmicks - I do think it's something that the players and the mods in the community should take care of themselves. But it's not okay imo. And the reply to this post is inevitably gonna be "well, then don't try to read them or clear them" to which I say: then why even play the game?

To put it shortly and bluntly: if anyone ever does this in a game that I am in, I will get seriously pissed.

Being a gimmick and pretending to be a noob gives way more of an advantage over a wolf saying unvote at 01

I'm aware of the rule. That wasn't the point. But you already know that

yeah i would really prefer that the game mods get the forum mods to check out any potential gimmicks in a game, and ppl at the very minimum being forced to truthfully confirm or deny that they are a gimmick. to play on a gimmick but act like some kind of noob is pretty lame, and not very fun for the other players i think.

Anyone who does it is completely lame.

We deliberately locked the thread late D1, because wolves had a power to RB anyone who posted after :00.

At least he admits he's a gimmick

I don't like it. But its not nearly as lame and angly as what atak is proposing should be legal

I will admit that when I play as a gimmick I check the player roster, and tend not to play in games that mets is in just because i know he'll be such an ass about it. I play for fun, not to put myself through that.
04-10-2012 , 10:34 PM
then don't play a gimmick

gimmicks are dumb

For me, it's usually play as a gimmick or don't play.

(Yes, I know what response comes to that.)
