The local tax place I went to today charges $25 if you have them prepare a return, but not file it.

Block doesn't and I thought that was the industry standard, but if the place you went to is the only option as a second opinion it's still often going to be worth it for a return of anything more than minimal complexity. (Admittedly is difficult for me to convey what that level of complexity is.) There are just so many things it's possible to screw up or, more likely, simply not notice or think of.

The trick is that for obvious reasons they won't hand you the return they prepared without charging you, which is why it can be best to whip it up in TurboTax yourself first, if you're contemplating self-filing, or have your CPA do it or whatever, then get a second place to do look that over. For that they'll usually charge (though you may convince your preparer not to, for a quick once-over), but again, it's often going to be worth it.

For any given return there is a single, correct answer, but the complexity is great enough that getting to that answer is something most professionals, from storefront moron to Big Eight (once) accounting firm, are not going to arrive very often.

Pet birds really don't interest me very much, but obviously bird photography is a challenging sub-hobby (which I have done very little of). It's not until you start trying to take pictures of birds that you realize just how small many of them really are — one needs some serious glass to get good shots, plus a hell of a lot of patience.

My father still displays, here in the house, a blowup of a pic I took of a mute swan on its nest. Taking that shot (which I did on a day when I'd skipped school, back in high school) required wading about a hundred yards out in chest-deep water, and then wondering whether the swan, which was seriously displeased at my approach, was going to attack me (which they do).

Any patented Atakdog advice for someone away from uni for last 13 years?

I knew the big yellow one, but the rest all look like birds to me.

As far as their names go, I think the first one was Charlie, and the other one was Henry.

So, prove me wrong then

Good call: That's because they are, basically. Different genus, but same family.

dip-ed? Diploma in education? I think my advice is to do something that pays better.

In all seriousness, tell me more about your question; maybe I really do have something.
