Tic Tac Walrus? Bingo Walrus? Roll Your Own Walrus? Fusion Walrus?

The Idea: I will lay out a bunch of categories and you pick 6. You lay three on one axis (A, B, C) and three on the other axis (1, 2, 3). So now you have a 3x3 grid just like in tic tac toe or a spreadsheet. So you song for A1 has to meet both your A categor and you 1 category, and so on. Some categories will get one or two bonus points becuase they are hard and/or risky. Let me lay out the categories and it should all become clear.

* - 1 bonus point
** - 2 bonus points
Two Star Categories
  • Don't call it a comeback** - A song from an artist or group that was dormant for at least 10 years before releasing this work. For a group, the individuals could have been active (so like The Smiths getting back together would totally count) but for a solo artist they can't have been active (so Johnny Marr getting back to a solo carreer would not count since he has never been dormant and played with like 10 groups since the Smiths broke up)
  • Released before 1960**
  • From an African artist**
  • From an Asian artist**
One Star Categories
  • Release between 1960 and 1979 inclusive*
  • From a South American Artist*
  • Significanf Jazz and/or Classical components*
  • Significanf Folk and/or Blues and/or Country components*
  • Metal and/or Intrumental*
  • Non English Vocals*

Normal Categories
  • Female Lead Vocals
  • Male Lead Vocals
  • Released between 1980 and 1999 Inclusively
  • Released in 2000 or later
  • Significant Hip Hop and/or Funk and/or Soul components
  • From a North American, European (including the British Isles), or Austrailian Artist

So say you picked From a South American Artist* for B and Non English Vocals* for 1. This would be a fitting (and totally awesome) B1 song that would get two bonus points:
Novos Baianos - A Menina Dança
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HRX3SMy8FE

That is 9 categories.

The tenth category: No restrictions, pander away, but list all the categories the song applies to for fun if you want.

Reveal will be A1 through B3 in some order, but the song categories in each round should be all over the map. Songs, granting that they fit the requisite 2 categories for their entry, will be ranked from least to most favorite. Bonus points will be added on the score. So you can get 4 bonus points for a song while finishing dead last in the category.

My musical tastes: I like all genre's but not all songs. I'll link some of the bajillion walruses I have run at some point, maybe. Categories like Folk tend to have a higher miss rate with me, which is why that is lumped with Blues (which I like but is going to probably be in a lot fewer peoples wheel house) and country (which is sort of in between blues and folk on those two axes).

When submitting, please spell out how the songs fit the categories if it is not obvious.

So your submission will look like:
A - Category
B - Category
C - Category
1 - Category
2 - Category
3 - Category

A1 entry
A2 entry
...
B3 entry
Unrestricted entry

interesting idea - but maybe the bonus scoring needs fixing - eg 9 songs by African artists (A=B=C=1=2=3=African artist) seems significantly easier than grids with 6 distinct row and column headings.

CLARIFICATION:
Categories can only be used once. I should have spotted that angel....

so we're building our own matrix then and have 9 submissions out of it ohhhhhhhhhhh

i thought it was 6

okay

ya know making a makeshift matrix so we could see it in action would have helped....i got it

okay i'll probably utterly fail this anyway

maybe i'll do it because the grid does sound cool

I'll put together a complete sample entry today or tomorrow. It was so clear in my head, just look at the picture in my brain and you'll be fine....

Still smh at my example, a mod fixing that would be great.

so I'm pretty sure my matrix (up to row and column permutation) is

 africanasiansouth american
<1960
1960-1979
non english vocals

But maybe that's cheating? I guess I could substitute
Jazz and/or Classical components or
and/or Intrumental

for the non-english vocs.

If I am submitting a cover (written in year X) of a song (written in year Y) which year counts towards your category restrictions?
02-18-2018 , 07:55 PM
subbed

Gonna make my sample over a few posts over the next couple of days, but here are the categories I'll use (all songs will be songs I like a lot)
A Asian
B South American
C Male Vocals

1 Hip Hop
2 Jazz
3 Female Vocals

A1 - Luv (sic) part 3 - Nujabes and shing02 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyoYf7rZVGI

A2 - Asian Jazz - A song I submitted from an artist I have submitted a few times (I don't think I'd snipe ANYTHING for this category, but lets be overly careful)

Dorlis - ひとりごとみたいにアイシテタ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiYRuySnVvQ

Dorlis is just the best.
02-19-2018 , 10:43 AM
A3 - Asian Female Vocals

Lee Hi - Rose - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff_SuAzll90

This is actually something that was submitted in one of my walruses by... loosekanon? Anyway, really like this.
02-19-2018 , 02:08 PM
just combing my previous entries to fnord_too walruses to try to avoid dupes.
