Will the initial head to head pairings be in the same category or completely randed?

I think I'd prefer the former

Start in category, then category winners go for best in show. Best song should still win.

My category is: "A song you would Shazam if you heard it in a bar for the first time."

Basically, something that's (1) memorable and catchy enough that you'd want to know what song it was, but (2) not so popular and frequently played that you'd already know

Let me know if this doesn't make sense

And yeah, I'm happy to do it that way too; the only problem is that category fit is then essentially meaningless, if it's just about whether people like "song submitted in category A" better than "song submitted in category B"

I prefer Eric's way; I think it strikes a good balance

Yes- then we'll do Eric's because of the number of entries.

Send me entries to each, then rank them.

Top 3 from each category make it to the knockouts.

that is not how I thought this was going to work

I thought it was knockout from the start.

The whole point of knock out from the start means you're not waiting around forever for someone to do their rankings
