6th Place-The Jam "Eton Rifles"
DonkDonkDonk
Now we are talking. This was a MASSIVE band in the UK but for whatever reason they just never became popular here in the States. I like The Jam a lot and was not surprised to see them as a submission. To me they are the bridge from straight punk to New Wave and many of their contemporaries are in the R&R HOF (The Cars, Blondie, Elvis Costello, etc).
This song was a hit though it paled in comparison to the popularity of some of The Jam's other hits (Town Called Malice, That's Entertainment, etc.)
I really like this song a lot. It maintains the band's punk energy but adds some new wave elements (keyboard in particular) and does so with an ear pleasing melody. If there are ny Brits in here can someone explain what he is singing about here?
HOF Worthiness: 2.5 Points I would have thought a bit higher but the experts don't agree. They were clearly influential but perhaps the limited geography of their fame is a problem.
Song Ranking: 8.5 Points Great song as described above
Genre Fit: 2 Points No question
Bonus Point: 1 Point Just for not picking "Town Called Malice"
Total Points: 14 Points
