Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Tears Of A Clown

Quote:
The opening to this song is super goofy. The song itself is so overwhelmingly happy that my inner cynic sort of withers away from it. Smokey's voice is good but gets a little annoying after a while? Or maybe I just suck. Song's pretty fun, regardless.

AC/DC - T.N.T.

Quote:
AC/DC has better. Much, much better. This one is pretty damn generic as far as they go, which makes it pretty damn generic as a hard rock song in general. Not bad, just not a standout.

Madness - Shut Up!

Quote:
Thought the song was going to be significantly more ska/rocksteady based on the title lol. As far as Madness songs go this one's pretty meh. The song is plenty jaunty but I'm not really feeling the vocals on this one, and the piano hits some pretty painful chords. Cool guitar solo though.

The Beatles - Twist And Shout

Quote:
I like the Beatles, but this isn't their greatest song. Some of the rawness on the vocals surprised me, but the song is fairly bland otherwise. And the screaming on the live recording isn't helping matters any. At least you're out of the basement!

The Beatles - Let It Be

Quote:
Another Beatles song that's just okay. Being overplayed may color this one a bit, I dunno. It's a pretty good ballad, but IMO it's by no means a standout. Doesn't do anything that makes me go "wow".

For future reference: if you want to game me with the Beatles, roll with the White Album

Dionne Warwick - (There's) Always Something There To Remind Me

Quote:
I guess the Naked Eyes version is a cover. TIL.

This is pretty cool. I'm digging some of the stuff going on in the background, and her voice is great. I kinda wish there was more percussion, I think. It feels like there's a lot of dead air even though the strings/horns/Dionne herself are all going ham. Otherwise strong track.

Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal

Quote:
My opinions on which MJ songs are best are pretty unconventional and I won't go into that here. But this one's pretty solid. Wish it was a bit more energetic. Kind of falls into a rut after a bit. Otherwise a really strong track.

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

Quote:
If you're gonna get sappy on me, piano and strings are the way to go. Get those cheesy vocals out of the way and let me enjoy the melancholy of the instrumental. This is a pretty piece that grew on me a lot, and is just shy of something I'd listen to Repeatedly. Bold submission. You're totally a weeb though.

The Stranglers - Golden Brown

Quote:
Is that a mother****ing harpsichord? Cool ****. I'm not a huge fan of these vocals, though; they somewhat offset the strength of the backing track. The song sort of falls into a rut, too. Shame, because the harpsichord is cool enough that it almost carries.

Some pretty decent guitar/organwork here. Song's too slow, though. I prefer Zep hard n fast.

Pyotr Iliovich Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture

Quote:
Good way to keep the age hidden

Real talk though, this is actually pretty lit. Slow starter but **** goes HAM when it gets in there. The cannons are pretty hype, too. A literal classic and a great composition.

Jesus Jones - International Bright Young Thing

Quote:
Love me some droney 90s guitar. The vocals detract from it but I love the overall feel of the track. It's generally something I feel like I can get lost in, and in this context that's a good thing.

Tears for Fears - Shout

Quote:
Fun fact: Tears for Fears VEVO isn't available in the US. Neat.

Anyways, this is a New Wave classic. Good vibes from this track. I could criticize it for falling into a rut, except that's clearly the point of the song, and it works here. Sometimes you just gotta... let it all out.

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

Quote:
Some damn good blues right here. Bill's voice is excellent, and the backing track does a great job complementing him. Absolutely love the vibes this puts out, and there's enough emotion to move even my cold cynical heart.

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

Quote:
This song is alright for the first portion, but nothing special. It's not until the guitar solo that I feel it truly gets Good - but damn, that's a spicy ass solo. Enough to bump the song up quite a few places, in fact. Always nice to hear a pre-brain damage Ozzy, too. I can actually tell what he's saying for once.

EDIT: research fail. turns out that's Ronnie James Dio. makes a lot of sense.

The Smiths - This Charming Man

Quote:
I figured out what I don't like about the Smiths. It's Morrissey. The way he sings isn't something I find particularly appealing. It's a shame, too, because the rest of this song is great. The backing track has a great energy to it, and I love the bassline. Someone get them a non-Morrissey singer though.

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name

Quote:
Great intro. Great driving feel. Great Iron Maiden-ness. Just a really strong metal track. In a weaker category this might have top fived - unlucky tbh. I've always been meaning to listen to more Maiden, so this is very welcome.

Danny Elfman - Cool City

Quote:
Another band I've always meant to listen to more of is Oingo Boingo, and Danny Elfman might as well be Oingo Boingo all by himself. This is some solid new wave - I like the pace this song sets, and the steady driving guitar in the background helps enunciate this. Someday Tim Burton will let Danny out of his basement so he can make popular music again...

Santana - Black Magic Woman

Quote:

But in all seriousness, this is great. The guitar work on this track is top-notch, as is to be expected with Santana. The vocals are simple yet effective, and if you tune into the background the drums are lowkey super spicy. Everything meshes together to make a great song.

The Animals - Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

Quote:
As a noted Kill Bill fan, this song holds a special place in my heart. But even beyond that, it's fantastic. As far as old 60s rock goes, this is one of the best songs out there. Incredibly catchy, and just overall great.

Yeah this is timeless. The solos are great, the breaks work, and every instrument goes super hard. As far as southern rock goes, it doesn't get much better than this/

****POST: Dio - Holy Diver (Jazzy Version)

Quote:
This is honestly a good enough standalone song to score this high anyways, and the fact that it's so out of left field makes it all the better. I love how funky the bassline is, and the solo is transcribed shockingly well. Props.

Steely Dan - My Old School

Quote:
Add Steely Dan to that list that has Oingo Boingo and Iron Maiden on it. This is just some really solid classic rock that I just happen to have never heard before. Really digging some of the vocal harmonies, the sax is excellently applied, and there's COWBELL, folks. Like, come on. That's practically instapodium right there.

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

Quote:
This is some of the most emotional guitar playing I've ever heard. There's a story here, and it's not being told through the vocals. Excellent pick. Potentially a controversial one. But an excellent one. The 10 minutes never struck me as long.
