Reel Big Fish - Cheer Up!

Quote:
Starting to think I never ACTUALLY outgrew my ska phase, though I will say that RBF's vocalist tends to be much more tolerable than other ska vocalists. Energetic, great horns, and I can kinda get behind the whole "life sucks" thing.

I never score Ace Attorney Music below an 8.

...that's one of my rules.

Tina Turner - Proud Mary

Quote:
I can never decide whether I like this or the CCR version better. They both have their merits. Tina Turner absolutely makes this her song, though. Incredibly soulful, and the entire second half of the song is absolutely fantastic.

George Harrison - Got My Mind Set On You

Quote:
I am a professed Beatles fan so this is not exactly a surprising placement. Harrison was always a top-tier Beatle anyways. Song combines a catchy hook with great energy on the verses to create an infectious track. Horns are minimal but it's not a big deal.

Duran Duran - Notorious

Quote:
Another hella funky Duran Duran track, good ****. Not quite as infectious as The Reflex, but it's got a great groove and a cool sax part. Once again, Duran delivers.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945

Quote:
Fun fact: in my last walrus, Zack sent me this song. I gave it like a 7.5. Clearly, the song has grown on me a LOT since then. I think the bassiness of it really bugged me when I first heard it? Doesn't bother me anymore, and everything else about it is pretty great. Sorry, Zack.

Boku no Hero Academia OST - You Say Run

Quote:
Thanks for reminding me that I need to watch season 2 lmao. Yeah this is really good. Constant driving guitar/drums in the background, some nice strings laid on top of that, and a killer french horn to top things off. The vague choir noises in the background near the end add a lot more to it than you'd think they would. Overall great track.

Electric Six - Danger! High Voltage

Quote:
Sometimes a song just Works. I thought I was gonna score this significantly lower and then it just wouldn't leave my head for like a week. This is why we listen to walrus songs more than once, kids. I can't even really quantify why it's so good. The sax is fantastic, though. I can say that for a fact.

I'll be giving out pity points sometime within the next few days. The timing of Category 8's reveal will be announced at that time.

Pity Points
What I've done for this is went back and regraded one song from each category that I felt received an undeservedly low score. The result is that seven people have been bumped up by between one and two points apiece.

Bonus points will not be affected in either direction by these new scores.

M83 - Go! (ft. Mai Lan)
7.4 -> 9.2 (+1.8)

Quote:
Think I was turned off by the slow start last time. Shortly after the reveal I playlisted it on a whim and it's rapidly becoming a strong sub for me. The choruses are fantastic and the guitar solo at the end is incredible.

Yeah, IDK what I was thinking on this one. Flow is great, lyrics are great, strong rap song. Must've been in a very anti-rap mood last time.

Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine
5.8->6.9 (+1.1)

Quote:
Not quite as overly psychedelic as I remembered it. The vocals still aren't my cup of tea but the instrumental is cool enough to give it a nice bump.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Kiss Them From Me

Quote:
This is a solid new wave groove and IDK why I was doubting that the first time through. It might get into a bit of a rut, yeah, but it's a pleasant rut, with a cool instrumental.

Goblins from Mars X Leonell Cassio - Memories (feat. Anne Lan)
3.9->4.9 (+1)

Quote:
I still don't really LIKE this song, but it wasn't as terrible as my first evaluation rated it. Its worst crime is being fairly boring, but the girl's voice is kind of nice, and the backing track isn't really all that offensive.

This doesn't really count as "pity", but whatever. I've been listening to this song a LOT over the past few days and it's ****ing great. Super catchy, sounds nice, just goofy enough to be a good time.

Have revisited this more than I thought I would. There's a certain haunting quality about it that draws me in. The vocals are objectively kinda not-that-great but there's a melancholy to them that's alluring. A grower.

I hate her voice, and I hate the fact that this song never goes anywhere. It feels incomplete to begin with, and the part that IS completed doesn't sound particularly good.

Bomb the Music Industry - All Ages Shows

Quote:
Punk bands doing slower songs is never something that works particularly well for me - it tends to expose the weaknesses of their vocalists, and this is no exceptions. What's probably supposed to sound raw and emotional just hits me as discordant in a negative sort of way.

Quote:
It's come to my attention that this is the same vocalist as in the previous submission, so I'm pretty comfortable with this placing. As you can probably tell, I'm not a fan of his vocal stylings. The music on this one is better though.

Yeah, I hate to break it to you, Xicor, but I don't like dubstep like. At all.
