2019 Summer Match Play Championships

We got lucky with the numbers and have exactly 16 for the Summer Match Play Championship. The match-ups for round 1 are all up and people can join their match and begin play (make sure you join the correct match!!).

Matches are

(1) Arjun13 vrs (16) KScully88
(2) SubArcticK vrs (15) Priptonite
(3) Bandwagon vrs (14) Cherrycin
(4) velourfog vrs (13) Anton-09
(5) Hg80 vrs (12) Kokirixx
(6) dogfloss vrs (11) Guessinator
(7) wafflesobv vrs (10) nails
(8) Derwi vrs (9) Shamsnemesis

Seed # is in brackets and wont change for the duration of the tourney. Highest remaining seed will play lowest remaining seed each round, 2nd highest will pay 2nd lowest, etc..

Note . You have until 8PM ET on July 2 to complete your games. Any games not played by then will be counted as losses.

Next round may start early if all matches are done before July 2nd.

Highest remaining seed will play lowest remaining seed? I really hope you didn't mean that. That's probably the most unfair way to do it. Why not just do it like last time in a normal bracket?

You have 3 days to "join" the tournament. You have until 11:19PM ET on July 27 to complete your games. Unplayed games will be counted as losses. If this round ends early we will begin round 3 early.

I think I am doing it the same way as last year. See above for 2nd round from last year.

By normal bracket, do you mean the same way a ranked 16 in a TC tourney would do it? (see the last world cup... it had 16)

Where 1,4,5,8,9,12, 13 and 16 are one bracket

and

2,3,6,7,10,11,14 and 15 is the other bracket.

and you seed high/low within the brackets after each round until one team from each side makes the final?

If that is what you mean I am open to that.

I have no problem doing it that way...

I didn't realize you did it that way last year, it's definitely not fair at all. The reward for kscully if he beats me, is to again play the top seed next round, which is harsh.

Yeah, by normal bracket, I mean how any TC tournament is run. Or a tennis grand slam.

As per Arjun's suggestion, I am going to set matches for the 2nd and subsequent rounds of the Summer Match Play the same way that Zac has programmed the TC site to assign matches in the quarterfinals and semifinals for all TC tournaments with 16 or 16+ players.

The first 8 matches do not change from how we started. They were correct.

See below for how future matches will be set..

2019 Summer Match Play

Folks, please abandon the first match I set up for each of you in the Summer Match Play. I used the wrong tourney set-up and instead of getting a max of 30 days to play (default for a FFA) your matches only have 3 days.

So, just abandon those and let them time out and please re-register in your match with NEW in the title..

5 matches did not even start yet, so no big deal there. Prip and I had a bunch of "practice" games, as did cherrycin and Bandwagon. And dogfloss played a bunch too..

Once again, sorry for the mix-up..

EDIT: I noticed this when the match Prip and I have said "2 days" remaining. I was WTF???

-- SubArcticK jumped out to a hot start in the June DC race -- through the first two weeks of the month, he was on pace to match arjun13's record-setting month in May. Things stalled a bit for SubArc over the next 10 days, which allowed Dynasty to catch and then overtake him. But SubArc regained his form, closing out the month with two wins and four other top-six finishes in the final week to win comfortably. SubArc's score of 302 in June was the 13th-best monthly score on record.

-- Dynasty finished second for the second straight month, while NP and Derwi posted back-to-back top-five finishes in May and June. consul, who narrowly missed the top 10 in May, was the other member of the top five in June.

-- Guessinator and Bandwagon finished just outside the top 10 in June, which ended Bandwagon's 11-month streak of top-10 finishes. arjun13, who finished eighth in June, holds the longest currently active streak at nine months.

-- At the halfway point of the year, it's a four-horse race between arjun, Dynasty, Bandwagon, and SubArc. Dynasty is leading the wins race, while arjun is ahead in total DC points; both are on pace for a full-year total that would be in the top three all-time.

Here are links to each year, just so we have them all in one place somewhere in this thread:

2017 TC DC Stats

2016 TC DC Stats

2015 TC DC Stats

2014 TC DC Stats

If I get ambitious, I may try to compile DC data from further back (the DC dates back to mid-2010). It might be nice to have all-time DC stats, besides the total wins and games played that are already on the TC site. This would most likely be a (very) long-term project, though.

In the meantime, I put together some top-performer lists in a few categories from the data we currently have. They can be found here:

TC DC Hall of Fame

This is still a work in progress, as there is a bit of missing data on games played in 2016 that I will need to track down at some point. But I will try to keep it updated on a monthly basis going forward.

Let me know if there are any other DC stat categories you want to see.
From the stats that nails has compiled, I thought it would be neat to see how the total wins look from 2014 onward, 2015 onward etc.

We all know that none of us will catch Dynasty for overall wins, but I thought it would be neat to see how certain periods chart out from a "point forward" basis, as few of us here started at the very beginning.

NOTE 1 - I will update the tables at the end of 2019

NOTE 2 - I was confused as to how I had 137 wins by these stats but 136 wins on the TC site. I then remembered that the lenc stats show an extra win in 2016 for SubArcticK, Kokirxx, lilirascal, mrgibson and velourfog. This was from a win taken from a banned player. Zac was going to add the win to the official stats but I guess he never did. No big deal, but explains the difference.

We recently passed the nine year anniversary of the game (Zac posted the game in L&L on 6/14/10).

To promote the game, I can publish a (well written) article about the game in the Two Plus Two Magazine.

The article should probably include something about the history of the game, this thread, the small but devoted community, and some strategy for new players.

If anybody is interested in writing (and making $200 ), let me know.

Dynasty, I can't think of anyone more qualified than you to do this. You have been here from the beginning and have seen strategies develop and evolve. You were here for the peak years when this thread had many vibrant discussions and sharing of information on strategies and tactics.

You also created the GOAT opening by tweaking the Charmer, and you are the all time wins leader.

Not sure if I set an unenviable record yesterday, but I played over 70 tourney games in about 16 hours (and golfed and mowed my lawn and neighbours lawn..lol)

Playing all 50 games of an H2H in one day is....

[x] not recommended
[x] definitely not recommended against arjun
[x] not going to end well....lol

golfed well though..

Arjun... in game 2, my rack 9... you are welcome..
Should have taken the day off after that.. Probably why I don't play poker any more...lol

-- July featured one of the closest monthly DC races in some time as the top four in the year-to-date standings battled it out. All four held the lead at some point during the month, but Dynasty came out on top in the end thanks to 23 top-10 finishes, including 5 wins. In his 5 monthly top-10 finishes so far in 2019, Dynasty has two firsts and three seconds.

-- Bandwagon finished in second place in July, just 3 points behind Dynasty. Bandwagon led all players with 6 wins for the month. arjun13 was third, posting 5 wins and 6 other top-5 finishes while extending his monthly top-10 streak to 10 consecutive months. SubArcticK and Hg80 rounded out the top five, with SubArc edging out Hg80 by a single point. Despite matching Dynasty's 23 top-10 finishes, SubArc had just 1 win in July.

-- Elsewhere in the top 10, Derwi overcame a slow start to finish 8th thanks to 5 wins, all of which came in the last half of the month, while Donk4 finished in the top 10 for the first time since December 2017. velourfog, Cherrycin, and Kokirixx were just outside of the top 10.

Hi Folks

I have been chatting back and forth with Zac about seeing whether we can get the hidden function back for tourney games. What this would mean is that any game you play in a tourney would be shown as “hidden” until your opponent plays, and then both scores for that game could be viewed.

I should say that I don’t think anyone is abusing the current system by viewing/replaying the results of tourney games that they have not yet played, but that does not mean it does not occur or that it could not occur in the future. I do know that every new player is surprised that the games are not hidden.

Also, we all try not play games in a tourney at the same time our opponent appears to be playing games. It just looks/feels bad. Once Zac sets games as hidden that will not matter at all.

The only possible downside to this is that for Free For All tournaments (FFAs) such as the Battle Royale, we wont know how well we did in any given game until all players have played that game. But, I am not sure that is a downside at all. In fact, one could argue that for Battle Royale’s it might even be more important if scores were hidden until all players have played the game. First, knowing how well you are doing relative to those who have already played a game doesn’t impact how you will play future games. Second, when we have Battle Royales and there are some really big scores sitting on the high recent scores ( 43568, for example), I really don’t want to be thinking about that when I have yet to play a big score game. The same could be said of really low scores in recent games. I don’t want to see 7890 or something knowing I have not yet played a low score game. If it starts raining ones early am I wondering, is this that low score game..???

So, I am suggesting that I ask Zac to hide tourney game results until both players have played the game. And, in the case of Free For Alls (Battle Royales), until all players have played the same game. This will provide the same integrity (more actually, if you think about it) than the Daily Challenge currently has.

Anyway, if there are any objections to me asking Zac to start hiding tourney game results until the opponent has played, please post here or on TC chatroll.

Thx

It is a downside, because there'll always be someone who flakes in one of those big games or decides to play all the games on the last day, and it sucks to not have any idea how you're doing - all your games just go off into the ether.

But I'm not sure it's a big enough downside to out weigh your bigger issues: the FFAs don't run that often.

True.. The 25 game progress reports by waffles would not mean much if some hold-outs were not playing games.. If people like progress reports or just looking and getting a sense of where they are, then that is a downside.

In fact, I think it was the reason that hidden was removed in the first place for tourneys. So that people could see how they are doing in FFAs.

But, as you said, does that outweigh other things..

I wonder if this is an easy toggle on/toggle off thing. That is, we could get Zac to toggle off when a FFA is running, and then toggle on when it is over??
