I don't want to lose the excitement of timed mode entirely, so this is the format that I'm considering:
Four qualifying tournaments played in normal tournament mode. Best of 7 games, unlimited size, seeded randomly. The winner of each tournament will advance to the final four. The final four will be best of 11 in timed mode, same as previous tournaments.
I think this adds some excitement while eliminating most of the scheduling problems we've faced in the past. Two other options:
- three qualifying tourneys, with the winners of the first two going to the final four and the three second place finishers and the winner of the final tourney playing a wildcard round.
- four qualifying tourneys, top two advance from each.
Thoughts?
Sounds like a good compromise. Tbh I like the first option best (4 qualifier tourneys, winners advance). It's simpler and means you don't have dead rubbers. Plus you have to win to advance. The problem I can see with this though is that the 4 qualifiers will probably have to be played concurrently (otherwise it will take forever), but then what happens if someone wins multiple tourneys? The second-place finishers battle it out somehow? Easy enough I guess if someone wins two or even 4 but very annoying if someone wins 3.
Could play two qualifiers first and then the winners of these don't play the last two qualifiers, which only start when the first two have finished. That solves the problem nicely.
How will the seedings be done for the Timed matches? Timed rating or random? Guess I prefer random.
Also, now we've seen that clearly anyone can win at best of 9s, can I make another push for making the matches longer? Make the qualifiers best of 9 and the Timed games best of 15?
