This whole house/buttah-toast disagreement doesn't feel like it's v/v very often to me, and feels like it could be a bit forced. Like i feel like Gad is making a lot of the same arguments that toast is, but I'm also likely missing something.

I agree with this. There's a 40% chance (i think that's the proper math) that there's no gossip in this game. Jay could be wolf or tc claiming gossip. Worst case, someone else claims gossip and there's a gossip battle.

If Jay is tc, a gossip battle is good for him as he becomes a strong lynch candidate. If Jay is tc and whispers with a wolf, then wolf knows he's tc. That's also good for him. If Jay is tc, it makes sense he would not out his peeks in thread, because they would be guess.

I thought Don was tc but just had a revelation it could be Jay.

Or Jay could be wolf, and yes, whispering with Gad lets him determine saintitude which is obv bad.

Or Jay could actually be gossip and he could provide us townsfolk with some actual information to dissect rather than keeping it private. I suggest he says townsfolk/wolf for his peeks rather than actual role.

we whisper, i say "i'm a baker," you say "cool! that's what my gossip info says you are!" and that tells you what, exactly, about the other info you have

contrariwise, from your perspective:

we whisper, i'm a lying wolf and say "i'm a candlestick maker," you say "ah, my info for you is different...that means my other info must be correct"?

that doesn't work either

like, unless i'm missing something, you have no basis to draw conclusions about the other role if:

a) i tell the truth and it matches the info you have
b) i tell the truth and it doesn't match the info you have
c) i lie and it matches the info you have
d) i lie and it doesn't match the info you have

other than c) being statistically unlikely, how will whispering help you divine, first, whether i'm telling the truth about my role and, second, what that means for the other role you have info about?

because there's a 40% chance gossip isn't in the game. and since 80% of people should be claiming villager, if no one counterclaims you as gossip, then you look more villagey.

i mean, i will backtrack on my own post just now and say that if his info with me is correct, then it makes it at least slightly more likely that the other info is not correct, but certainly not anywhere close to certain

also, if his info with me is correct, then it makes me (from his perspective) much more likely to be villa (affiliation, not role), assuming his info is that i have a villa role

so i guess

1) jay has claimed gossip

2) nobody has counterclaimed (unless someone did so in the ~20 posts i haven't read yet)

3) this makes jay very likely to be gossip or else he has balls of steel

4) my big objection to whispering with him is the event he's a wolf and can then sniff me and learn my role

5) but if he's >>>rand not to be a wolf, then i think i have no real objection to him whispering with me

6) although i still don't know what it gets us beyond maybe him being more certain that i'm town
