In this thread, we will play a new word game called Sides. It's somewhat similar to codenames, but cooperative and different.

Sign up with /in below if you want to play.

In this game, a target word will be randed as will a row of 7 cards that have letters on them (most 1 letter, some 2/3/4 letters).

2 people will be the guessers and everyone else will be able to give a clue.

The clue given must start with the letter on either the first or last card (the 'sides' of the row).

We discuss as a team who will give the clue with open discussion in the thread such as "I have a 7 letter word starting with a C"

Once there is some agreement on who gives the clue, that person will bold the clue they want to give in the thread.

The two guessers will then discuss in the thread and bold their guess. If it's correct, we move on to the next guessers and the next word. If wrong, then the clue givers post some info like "you are warm" or "you are about 30% there" etc to give directional info on how on track/off track their guess is.

Then they discuss and give another clue. But the person who bolded a clue cannot give another clue for the same word until everyone on the cluing side has clued a word (if we take that long to get the word), so one person can't hog the cluing.

Clues have to be one word, or an acronym, etc like in codenames; they can be hyphenated words

We can also give some info on how the clues relate to each other, or even say a clue is a 0 clue, so the opposite of what cluing for (e.g., clue 'colorful' as an opposite clue because the word is zebra)

I'll provide more details and examples in the thread in the morning, but this should be enough info for you to /in and join so we can play.

Reading the official rules helped me visualize it a little better, but it’ll probably take a few rounds to get into the groove.

yeah once I post some examples it'll make more sense, but it's also co-operative (tho we may make our own competitive version in the future), so you don't need to know much and can just dive in when we start

I hope to get some examples up later today

I can't find info online about the game cards, etc to put into a randomizer, so we'll start this on Monday, which is after the holiday weekend anyway.

I've ordered it 2-day shipping so I should get this weekend and then I can enter the cards into a spreadsheet and get everything setup.

I'll post some examples and discussion over the long weekend in the interim to get people acquainted with it, but we'll start on Monday.

we are just giving 1 word clues to try to get the guessers to guess the word

no word list, so could be any word (words are nouns or places I think, so not *any* word) and could be 2 word answers as well

played it Monday night at board game night; first clue was Investment, next was Oink; target word was Piggy Bank...you can do some stuff with the cards like put the I card under the O card so it's like "investment in a pig"

it'll make sense when we play, but generally it's giving one word clues to get the guessers to guess the magic word...the more clues we have to give, the worse our score, so we want to try to give less clues and our guessers to guess the word in 1-2 clues if we can

Ugh, apparently 2nd day air means Monday when it ships the day before Thanksgiving since I guess today and the weekend don’t count

So either Monday evening or Tuesday start depending on when it comes in; need to get it in and then enter it into a sheet to setup so we can play it

Game Info:

In this game, we have 26 letter cards. 2 each of the following 13 types:
A
B
C
D L
E F
R G
I H
M
P
S
T
J O V W
U N K Q

(if a card has multiple letters on it, your clue can start with any of those letters)

This means that one game will last 26 turns (guesses), so the max points we can get is 26 points, although that would require guessing each word with just one clue, which is prolly impossible. The game gives awards for 6 to 17 points, so we'll see how we do.

For the setup, I will randomize 7 of the cards and post them in a row like so:

DL S DL C RG UNKQ JOVW

2 people will be guessing each round (working together), and everyone else knows the target word and can give a clue. So one of the clue givers will volunteer to randomize the word from my google sheet and pm it to everyone else that is a clue giver.

Let's say the word is: Deer

people talk in the thread about clues they may be able to give:

"I have a 3 letter D word"
"I have a 7 letter V word"
"I have a 5 letter V word"
"I have a 5 letter D word"

and then we discuss and decide who should bold their clue

Note: Once you bold a clue, you cannot bold another clue until everyone else on the clue giving team has given a clue for this word (or guessers guess the right word and we go to the next round); this prevents people from just running everything themselves

In this case the clues above I was thinking of were doe, venison, Vixen, Donner. Note that saying Reindeer would get the word as deer is part of it. So remember that when guessing, as there are things like both toast and toaster in the word list or fire and fire extinguisher...so may as well guess the longer one when guessing.

Let's say I clued Donner and the guessers guessed Rudolph

Now we can all discuss how close they are..."hot" or "90% there" or "you are close"

Now we can give another clue and the board looks like this:

S DL C RG UNKQ JOVW

so the DL card is gone as it was used for Donner; so now we can do S words or JOVW words:

"I have a 5 letter V word" (Vixen)
"I have a 7 letter V word" (venison)
"I have a 4 letter S word" (stag)
"I have a 7 letter S word" (shotgun)

and we give another clue and they guess again

If we use all 7 cards without guessing the word, we move on to the next round with a new word and a new guessing duo

you'll end up guessing 2x in a row (except first person) as we just move the slot down one each time. For example:

nich
eye
ibd
d1
filthy

nich/eye will guess while the other 3 give clues round 1
eye/ibd will guess while the other 3 give clues round 2
ibd/d1...
etc

When we get a new round, I'll rand new cards into the middle of the row so we are back to 7 at the start of each round.

Some clue management options for us:
indicate a particular order for the clues (e.g., if we clue movie then volleyball then we can indicate the order is volleyball movie to help get Castaway)
repeat an already given clue
indicate which clue(s) is the one that best describes the word
indicate which clue(s) are less useful/accurate
group clues by category to separate different interpretations of the word (can't tell the category, but could say clues 1&2 are for one meaning and clue 3 is for a different meaning)
indicate a clue is opposite of the word meaning (e.g., colorful - opposite for zebra)
place a clue card under another clue card or one on top of another clue card (to indicate, under or inside, etc)
anything not on this list that involves placement of the clue cards (letter cards) on the table, and then the guessers can deduce what we may mean by it

so those are the kinds of things we can discuss freely in the thread to help indicate how clues work together; try to stick to those above from the rulebook, tho we may decide as a group to add other things in the future

Skipping letters:
If we think there is an amazing clue for the 2nd letter card from the left, we can choose to give that clue, but the left-most card we skipped would also go away, so we are basically using 2 of our 26 turns to do this

Remember, we can discuss any card on the table, so like for archaeologist target word, I indicated that I had a 4 letter word for I, which was closer to the middle of the row, which later with other clues got the guesser to think it was Indy as a confirmer for archaeologist

Prohibited clues:
clue containing same root as the word (e.g., cluing Prince for Princess)
clue in another language (can't use Agua to clue for water with an A card)
clue with more than one word (use Leonardo, can't say Leonardo da Vinci, just like in Codenames)

Allowed clues:
compound words
proper names (one word)
onomatopoeia (moo)
acronyms

Guesses that are close enough will work: e.g., Actress for Actor.

I think that's enough for now. Just playing it will clear up anything. Post if you have any questions. /in if you haven't already. Otherwise, I'll rand and we'll start this afternoon

in so far:
nich

bolt
dr zeus
ibd
filthy
ervin

randed player order:
ervin
dr zeus
bolt
nich
ibd
d1
filthy

so ervin and zeus are first guessers!

I'll rand a word and pm everyone else and then we can get started

Others can join in during at least the first round of the game (and prolly later since no teams)

If we wanted to give a clue from card 4 or whatever and the other team got it immediately, is it still scored the same as it would be from card 1?
SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread Quote

No, if we skip a card to give a clue from a non-side card, then the cards from that card to the edge are all discarded

for example, if we wanted to clue from the C card now, we'd be skipping RG card so both C and RG would be discarded after the guess, which means we now only have 24 more guesses instead of 25 if we had let them guess on RG

so I don't really see much use in skipping that often; could instead just give an RG word in case they get it and then the C word as backup, but maybe if you think an RG word will confuse them then there could be cases (or the logic of "they skipped for this so it must be super strong")

the other cards being out there is more useful for planning an order of clues, who gives which clue, and so we can discuss them, which could help the guessers get it if they can suss out what we may be thinking of or if it helps confirm them on one path than another
