Scotland Yard - The new forum game Scotland Yard - The new forum game

Scotland Yard is a 30-year old board game that has recently been introduced to POG. It has turned out to be an excellent forum game!

Up to now 5 multiplayer games have been completed and a second HU game is currently running.
  • Post here if you want to discuss the strategy, setup and/or balance of the game!
  • Post here if you want to play a game!

Multiplayer games run with 6 players and who gets to be Mr. X is determined by rand. This is a good way to play your first game as you will discuss your moves with other players and pick up the game pretty quickly.

The disadvantage of the multiplayer game is that one good detective can take control of the strategy and the other players are just going with the flow and need not spend too much energy.

The Heads Up games are different. One player controls all detectives, the Detective movements will be better coordinated and there is no discussion in the thread that can help Mr.X figure out what the Detectives are planning.

It is known that the game is pro-Detective, but with additional agreements on special move cards, this can be fixed.

Wanna play TBATM?

HU or with 6 players?

I think I will wait until I die in POG Corral before I play another Scotland Yard HU game

I don't think I will play any more 6-player games

Yeah HU is a million times better imo. Cheers again for bringing this game in Gabe, just spent 4 hours playing the board game at home tonight

In my next HU game I want to try again with 2 double move tickets and just give Mr. X an extra black ticket and 2 starting spots to choose from.

In my game vs soah I think I had my first chance to catch him on turn 22 (and I did ), but before that has was ever out of range. soah, it that true or were you exposed earlier in the game as well?

No, but I had to use my first two double moves to avoid making moves that had a very high chance of losing.

Question: Let's assume the stops are like this

1-2-3-4.

1 and 4 are bus stops, while 2 and 3 are taxi only.

If Mr.X is on -1-, can he travel by bus to -4- if a detective is on -2- or -3-? I'm thinking yes, but I'm not sure.

I've always assumed so.

I just noticed there's an iPhone/iPad app of this for $4.99. Does anybody have it? Is it worth it?

There's also a free one called detective chase or something like that which is exactly the same game. Its good to practice your detective game but dreadful if you play as Mr X. You reveal and then the computer moves the detectives further away from you!

FYI, in the updated board game rules each detective has 11 taxi tickets and they can move in any order. Maybe they worked on the balance of the game since the 60s or whenever the rules were first written...

Sounds like that would be good for a four-detective game.

being able to move in any order greatly increases the power of the detectives and seems like it makes the game less strategic, because the planning of moves is suddenly less complicated.

Couldn't find the free one, so I YOLOed and spent $5

It's decent, but the CPUs on Hard can sometimes be dumb. I've gotten to the point where I won't even use all 5 detectives. Usually 4, sometime 3. I am like 8/10 with 5 detectives, 4/5 with 4 and 1/4 with 3. The issue with 3 I have found is there are so many spots where you know Mr. X is only at a few select locations, but there's too many escape routes to cover them all so I spend 15 turns in the same area never being able to capture Mr. X. Computer Mr. X will also never use a black ticket unless they boat.

As Mr. X, I'm like 15/15 and only a handful of times have I actually been forced to use a 2x move. I'm not sure how to make it more of a challenge.

I will take one week off from playing anything, but after that I am up for a new challenge

The 3 double ticket setup I will not consider anymore. I looked at the mic vs rawrs game and I doubt mic had any chance from the getgo. He played a bunch of suboptimal moves, so rawrs only needed 1/3 double tickets, but I do not think he could have gotten close to actually trapping rawrs.

Who wants to play another HU game?

I have a small pref for being Mr. X but detectives will be fine too - if you have never been Mr. X

I propose 6/2 black/double move ticket configuration and 2 starting spots to choose from.

Someone rand?
My contribution in the weekend might be on the low side.

I suppose I can be Mr. X this time
See if I can postpone my demise until after turn 5.
