To your Q, I'd just say never be shy of stating what you're picking up, whether the other posters seem to be going another direction or you feel it won't add much, and inquiring. Ask questions when you spot inconsistencies or you can't follow someone's thought process/read. I feel that's a good place to start getting reads as well
Did you play mish-mashes in the before time? Since those offered way more to just figure out logically , as opposed to raw reads. That's what I did mostly. Get really into the mechanics, creating overviews for the v etc.
