RankFictional VillainDrafterNote
1Marlo Stanfield (The Wire) (7)True NorthGood character. #2 on Rolling Stones TV villains list (behind Benjamin Linus from Lost?).
2Darth Vader (1)aaronk56Iconic bad guy, but pretty one dimensional.
3Hannibal Lecter (1)D1iabol1calNever really been that into Silence of the Lambs. Iconic villain & all, though.
4Al Swearengen (7)insanity31Never watched Deadwood, but sounds like a pretty cool character.
5The Joker (5)iraisetoomuchIconic villain who has taken on a # of different forms. I've never been that into the character, though. Always seems more into playing games than being evil.
6Voldemort (5)PokerCrazy94Dunno. Not that into Harry Potter. Snake-faced dude is whatever.
7Hans Gruber (9)EricAn ok villain. Not that sadistic apparently, though, & got killed by some random cop…
8Count Dracula (6)rtspursI'm not really big on Dracula lore. Bit old school for my tastes. My primary familiarity with Dracula these days is in the Hotel Transylvania movies my kids love.
9Agent Smith (6)SuqAta8Doesn't really do it for me as a major villain. Got destroyed by Neo in the 1st movie, & apparently comes back as a virus in the next 2? Meh.
10Thanos (10)chuckleslovakianI'm not too familiar with Thanos, but he's got a weird looking head & I'm not that familiar with him, soooo…

Fictional villains is a pretty deep category, and I found these difficult to rank. As I mentioned in the draft thread, my personal favorite was left undrafted.

For the impatient types, scroll way down to the end for a tl/dr list.

A good villain should have several of the following characteristics:

1.They should have clear, logical goals. They should have reasons for behaving the way that they do. They’re not evil for the sake of being evil.

2. They should be a worthy adversary for the protagonist.
They have some depth to their character. Ideally, the villain reveals something deeper about human nature or the nature of the universe

3. They should be frightening and/or intimidating.

The iconic nature of the villain and/or the degree to which they’ve permeated pop culture should probably be figured in there somewhere as well. Bonus points for the most iconic villains. The ranking will also be dependent somewhat on how much I liked the work the villain appeared in.

The factors above were weighted in an arbitrary and capricious fashion for each villain to arrive at the final result. I’ve re-arranged this list dozens of times, and I’ll probably never be fully happy with it. What follows is my best attempt at a ranking.

Some spoilers may be present in the write-ups if that is a concern.

In 10th place:
Spoiler:

Thanos – chuckleslovakian

I’m not a comic book guy. I probably only see 1/10 of the comic book movies that come out. The only thing I knew about Thanos was that he was featured in the most recent Avengers movie, so I watched that. I also read up on him online to get as good of a picture as possible within a reasonable time frame.

I think Thanos is a pretty good villain, but he has very tough competition here.

His plan to kill half the people in the universe is really stupid. He’s meant to be smart, so surely he’d realize there would be more optimal ways to use his apparently limitless power. He’s OP, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a good villain. Infinity war was pretty good for a comic book movie, but I like it less than most of the other stuff these villains appear in. For those reasons, he has to be 10th.

In 9th place
Spoiler:

Agent Smith - SuqAtaq8

I liked the first Matrix movie, and Agent Smith is a good villain in it. Great performance by Hugo Weaving. As the series wore on, I kind of lost track of what exactly Agent Smith was and what he wanted. He seemed to exist exclusively to create ever more over the top kung fu battles. A solid villain, but he’s outshined by the others on this list. I can’t really justify ranking him ahead of any of the others remaining.

In 8th place
Spoiler:

Voldemort – Pokercrazy

This ranking might be quite controversial. Sorry, Potter fanatics.

I think Harry Potter is a fantastic series of books. However, I always thought the Voldemort character was one of the weak points. He’s a rather generic bad dude. The whole death eater / anti-muggle thing always seemed kind of silly to me. Obviously, I understand the underlying message against racism and such. It’s probably good for kids, but I’m an adult and just don’t find it all that compelling.

I don’t even think he’s the best villain in the Harry Potter series. I’d give that to Dolores Umbridge

To someone ~15 years younger than me Voldemort is probably the iconic villain, but I’m afraid I don’t see it that way. Still, his iconic status to the younger set gives him a boost. I’ve had him last on most versions of this list.

In 7th place
Spoiler:

Count Dracula - Spurs

I’ll confess to never having read the original novel. I did see Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which apparently is one of the more faithful adaptations. I read up on all the changes from the film to the movie to get a decent feel for how the character was originally intended.
I didn’t really like the film, but Oldman was pretty good in it and it had some creepy moments. Dracula definitely gets bonus points for being super iconic and popularizing the idea of vampires. (Some negative points for indirectly inspiring Twilight.) He rates highly on the scary category as well.

I don’t find Dracula as a character super interesting. Perhaps he’s a victim of his own success because vampires have become overused and kind of boring.

In 6th place
Spoiler:

Hans Gruber – Eric

Die Hard is one of the all-time best action films, and Hans Gruber is one of the best villains. Alan Rickman (RIP) gives a fantastic performance. I just can’t quite bring myself to rank him above any of the remaining villains. The others are either more iconic or more interesting characters.
Very possibly made up thing I read on the internet: In his iconic death fall at the end of the movie, they told Rickman he’d be let go on the count of 3, but actually let him go early to help achieve a genuine look of surprise.

In 5th place
Spoiler:

The Joker - irtm

The Joker is the GOAT comic book villain. The character benefits from some great performances. Obviously, we have Ledger and Nicholson, but Mark Hamil is also good in the animated Batman series. I even like Caesar Romero in the 60s Batman series, painted over mustache and all.

The Joker certainly has a bit of the “evil for the sake of evil” thing going on, but somehow it works for the Joker. It feels like a more organic part of his character. He makes a great foil for Batman. Batman and Joker have one of the most compelling villain/hero relationships in all of pop culture.

He’s very iconic. He’s scary in the way that any unhinged lunatic would be. I find him more compelling than any of the characters below him. For these reasons, I’m pretty happy placing him here.

In 4th place

Spoiler:

Darth Vader - ak56

Star Wars might be the single most overrated thing in all of pop culture. It is decent and entertaining enough, but not nearly worthy of the level of fervor it gets.

Still, Darth Vader is a pretty good villain. He’s cool looking and quite intimidating. He’s very iconic. He fits perfectly as the bad guy for the Star Wars films.

I think his bad-assness is diluted by the prequel films, and by the fact he kind of redeems himself and becomes a hero again eventually.

I found Vader to be the toughest to rank. I’ve had him all over the list, but this is where he ended up.

Marlo Stanfield – True North

The Wire seasons 1-4 is absolute peak television. Season 5, and the serial killer storyline, in particular, dilutes the show’s legacy just a little, but The Wire remains a top 3 show for me. I like The Wire better than anything any villain in this list appears on, so Marlo gets a boost for that.

Marlo ticks all the boxes I outlined for a good villain. He’s intimidating, smart, and utterly ruthless. I wouldn’t think of trying to pull one over on him. I’d have no chance.

Jamie Hector’s performance as Marlo is outstanding. He nails everything, right down to Marlo’s confident walk. The show was known to cast legitimate former street people, and I thought Jamie might be one of those - but it turns out he was just the typical actor kid.

He’s probably the least-known villain on this list, but I think his authenticity makes up for his lack of popular acceptance.

In 2nd place

Spoiler:

Al Swearengen – insanity

Al Swearengen might be my favorite character in all of film and television. He’s certainly top 5. Deadwood also happens to be one of my favorite shows. I was born and raised in South Dakota and worked in the real Deadwood all through college, so I guess that adds a little to the appeal for me.

He’s basically got everything Marlo does, except he’s got a wicked sense of humor on top of it, making him more engaging to watch.

I’d put him at #1, but I don’t think he was the villain after season one. He shifted into arguably the main protagonist but was obviously still an anti-hero type of dude.

FIRST PLACE HYPE

Spoiler:

Hannibal Lector – D1iab

I saw The Silence of the Lambs in the theater. I was 14 years old, which is probably too young for that movie. I don’t have specific memories of very many movie theater experiences, but I remember that one very well.

Hannibal Lector scared the living **** out of me. The scene where he escapes the temporary prison shook me to the bone. No other villain on this list came remotely close to provoking such a visceral response from me.

Anthony Hopkins has only about 16 minutes of screen time in that film. On an impact- per-minute basis, Hannibal Lector absolutely crushes.

He ticks all the villain boxes and earns the ionic bonus to place him at #1 on this list.

Thanks to all players! There wasn’t a true dud in the bunch. I had a fun time trying to rank them. I apologize in advance for any butthurt and/or logical inconsistencies in my rankings.

Too long didn’t read condensed list

Spoiler:

3.Marlo Stanfield
4.Darth Vader

I don't remember if I said it before, but my gut response to this category was Raistlin Majere. I didn't go with him because 99.9% of the time no one else would know him, and he was actually a hero whose goals did not align with the vast majority of those who lived in his world. So I took a chance on Gruber at the last minute.

First opinion goes to aaronk56:

10 - Big Trouble in Little China
Haven’t seen it so I have to put it last.

9 - Castle in the Sky
Another movie I haven’t seen. It has better ratings than Big Trouble in Little China so it gets ninth.

8 - Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
Another movie I haven’t seen although I was a fan of the original Star Trek and I have seen the first three movies, so it comes in eighth.

7 - The Fly
Ok I saw this movie but didn’t think it was good. Maybe should re-watch it sometime but I’m not a fan of Jeff Goldblum.

6 – Platoon
This movies is fine but there are better movies about Viet Nam and there are better movies by Oliver Stone.

5 - Top Gun
A fun movie not epic but solid for its genre.

4 - Stand By Me
The first of really good movies from 1986.

3 - Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Another really good movie, a lot of good scenes and memorable lines. The type of movie that you can enjoy watching a few minutes of anytime you come across while channel surfing.

2 – Aliens
A great sci-fi film, the best of the Alien series and one of the best movies made by James Cameron.

1 - Blue Velvet
An extraordinary work by a genius. Easily number one.

D1iabol1cal has some hot takes:

10. Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home – lol Star Trek.

9. Castle in the Sky – I just can’t get into anime at all.

8. Ferris Bueller's Day Off – John Hughes is pretty hit or miss with me, and this is a miss.

7. Top Gun – It’s okay, but I have no desire to ever watch it again.

6. Blue Velvet – Dennis Hopper is great in this, but the movie just leaves me cold, like most Lynch movies do.

5. Stand By Me – Solid coming of age drama.

4. Big Trouble in Little China – Good, silly fun, and very rewatchable.

3. Aliens – One of the better sci-fi movies out there.

2. The Fly – Love this movie. Cronenberg at his best.

1. Platoon – I’m an Oliver Stone fanboy and I love war movies. Win-win.
