Older people bought them, initially and thereafter. The younger crowd who tended to be harder on them prefer their performance cars in black or "silver" (afaic, gray). Red occasionally, too, but the blues and yellows were purchased disproportionately by a different generation.
I found this out when I joined an S2000 board that had a sub-forum for owners over 40. While less than 5% of total S sales in the relevant years (they offered that blue for only three or four years, I think) were blue, about a fourth of the members of the over-40 group had blues.
