This is of course inevitable in any large scale farming operation of the types required to successfully feed the eleventy billion people or so that now occupy this planet.

And xander is of course right that there is a hierarchy. My cat can NOT be vegan. When people get in my face about her diet and her "victims" I reply that an OBLIGATE CARNIVORE can not have victims. They can only have food. When I adopted her as a tiny stray found abandoned by the side of the road I committed to doing my best to keep her healthy and well, and that takes precedence over the animals who become animal products for her. Fortunately as she weighs 11 lbs, the amount of death and suffering she causes is miniscule compared to if I resumed eating meat.

For carnivorous pets, really lab meat is the only true solution, and i'm not even sure how that would work for animals like snakes who prefer their prey live.

That said:

1) Most of the crops in this country are grown to feed livestock, NOT people. If we stopped eating animals we would need to grow a fraction of what we do today, which would also spare more insects and field rodents.

2) I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to care more about the life of a demonstrably self-aware animal like an elephant as opposed to a mosquito. Plus **** mosquitos anyway.

3) I do think there would be a lot more people abstaining from or reducing their consumption of animal flesh if we all had to kill it ourselves. It's very easy to ignore the origins of a boneless, skinless chicken breast wrapped in plastic. Less easy to ignore a whole bird. And even less easy when that bird has feathers and is alive and running around. But our lawmakers actively do the opposite in this country and pass regulation after regulation making it illegal to report on factory farming practices, to photograph the conditions the animals are forced to tolerate, and to exclude consumption animals from animal cruelty statutes.

It's criminal.

I promise I will get off my soapbox now. Thank you all for indulging me.

Re: POG Pub May 2021: Maybe if I ask your Dad and Mom

I think it's fine to care more about humans than pigs and octopus than chicken and mice than mosquitos and crickets obv. And obv lots of bad practices in factory farming.

But if we were in a magical agrarian lifestyle I'd guess people raised to slaughter animals would be fine slaughtering animals. Should be able to find some historical context. Plenty of peeps raise and slaughter chickens *humanely*/organically even nowadays, though.

On the opposite end in the future when we have star trek teleporting technology we're raised to think is fine we may not care about destroying ourselves to recreate ourselves.

Re: POG Pub May 2021: Maybe if I ask your Dad and Mom

I sometimes eat meat in certain situations. The rest of my family eat meat but my wife is particular, the kids are picky and the dog is on a strict diet for medical reasons and can't have human food. If there is a piece of meat in the fridge that will expire or leftovers of some meal that will end up in the bin then I will eat it.

It doesn't happen nowadays but if we ever visited anyone and they cooked a meal containing meat then I'd eat it. But in general I eat a hell of a lot less meat that your typical person.

I used to be stricter about things. I used to let meat expire and leftovers go in the bin. But even at my strictest I never described myself as vegetarian. I just didn't eat meat. I don't like the label or any label for that matter. Can't people just eat what they want for whatever reasons they want without being categorised?

this is basically what my wife is like, she's 95% vegetarian but will eat meat rather than let it go to waste, and doesn't like to make a fuss if others are cooking for her

obv this means I eat a lot less meat that I used to, but overall I generally concur with something I heard Jay Rayner (my favourite of the UK restaurant critics) say once, which is that eating meat is almost certainly immoral, but I can live with my own moral failings in this area

I've also started making sure meat is 'worth it' more, and where it isn't, subbing in a veggie alternative (eg: I could happily eat quorn nuggets instead of chicken nuggets basically forever, because really I'm only in it for the dipping sauces anyway)

Eh, I'm not going to give up meat. I like the taste too much. Burgers and steak are excellent.

But we do do vegetarian meals 1 - 3 times a week. It's a start.

I kind of suspect learning to cook vegan food well would give you a leg up on other cooks since you have to care more about flavouring, add in certain fats and cheese later at some point.

As far as being labeled whatever who knows. It's just a shortcut to understanding someone (are you vegan or vegetarian, moral or dietary or other reasons etc). And some may not want to be grouped with the militant vegans so avoid the label. But then again maybe not wanting to be labeled that shows a bias towards vegans.

I have zero interest in being vegetarian or vegan and would be far more likely to go full carnivore than either. That said, I have no problem if anyone chooses to go that route for themself. Much like anything else it's when you have militant evangelical types and talk of banning things that everything gets unpleasant.

A week seemed like a good amount of time where you have to try to mix it up meal wise to not get bored but not over committing to certain failure.

but what's the goal? Unless you actually want to go full vegetarian/vegan then a vegetarian day here or there is not a failure.

Whatever your goals are (health/religion/animal welfare/environment) a success is every meal you don't have meat.

But if you're just doing it because society/Facebook/whoever says you should, then I wouldn't bother at all.

Yeah. Thats sort of where we are. We just fit in a veggie meal where it works out. And if we end up eating all meat that week, we don't let it consume us.

If you like spicy food then this a great starter recipe without going overboard:

https://www.eatingbirdfood.com/curried-shakshuka/

(Remove the eggs to make it vegetarian)

Re: POG Pub May 2021: Maybe if I ask your Dad and Mom

bloo's kickass lazy black beans

- fry an onion
- when the onion's only got like two minutes left, throw in 2-4 cloves of garlic (depending on your love for garlic), and a generous shake of fennel seeds
- add a can of black beans, including the liquid
- simmer for as long as you need to prepare whatever you're eating this with
- blend roughly
- add salt to taste, and stir in a tablespoon of butter (or vegan substitute, or I guess you could leave it out entirely but don't because it makes everything better)
- serve

tastes ****ing incredible in a wrap with falafel and salad, or really in any situation where you may wish to deploy beans

Assuming you're not wedded to burgers with nothing but beef on bun, burgers are pretty well a solved problem. I defy anyone to eat my bbq blue cheese burger and notice anything different from a burger that was made of cow.

Steak and seafood, on the other hand, aren't really there. But not many people eat steaks and/or seafood every day, at least where I live, so if people gave up everything but those they'd still do an awful lot for the planet, if nothing else.

But yeah, like xander said, even making vegetarian meals a regular part of the rotation can have a huge impact, especially on our environment.

Speaking of which, I just finished my lunch. Today was a romaine and spinach salad topped with quinoa, chickpeas, cucumber, grape tomatoes, roasted red pepper hummus, avocado, a few olives, and lemon/olive oil dressing.

So good.
